The Harvard Summer Undergraduate Research village (HSURV)

• Check-in times available from June 6-9th will be 9am-5pm; please be as specific as possible with your ETA in your confirmation form. 
• Fellows arriving in the evening after check-in may pick up their key from the Winthrop Security Desk stationed in G entry (located in Gore Hall), and formally check in the following day and complete housing forms provided by the on-call proctor, whose contact information will be posted at the entrances to Winthrop House.

• Fellows arriving in the late evening or on days after check-in may contact the on-call proctor listed at the front entrances of each Leverett House entryway.

What to Bring

• Linens: sheets for twin XL bed, pillow(s), blanket, towels

• Fan: It can get very hot and muggy and the dorms are not air-conditioned. Air conditioner installation is NOT allowed in your room.

• A light jacket/sweatshirt, rain coat, umbrella 

• Business casual cothing for final presentations 

• Clothes and shoes appropriate for the laboratory (long pants, closed-toe shoes)

• Clothes for warm weather. There are several beaches within range of public transportation, so you may want to bring a bathing suit.

athletic pass & facilities

You will receive an athletic pass membership and will have use of the MAC, Blodgett Pool, QRAC, and Hemenway Gym during summer hours. Check the Harvard Recreation website for a full listing of facilities and additional information (summer fitness classes, Sailing Center, golf simulator, and more). 

Dining

HSURV Dining includes breakfast, lunch and dinner Monday through Saturday, and brunch and dinner Sunday, at the Winthrop House dining hall. Please swipe your Harvard ID at the entrance to the Winthrop House Dining Hall at each meal.All meal service requires your HUID to swipe in. Please try to get to the servery at least 20 minutes before posted closing time at the latest to get food and return your tray, so the dining hall staff is not delayed in closing. Food available during meals is for immediate consumption only—do not take food out of the Dining Hall (except for bagged lunch outlined below) to store in your room for later or to share with non-residents. The meal service schedule during the summer will be the following, seven days a week:

• 1. • Breakfast – 7:30-10:30am (continental on Sunday)

     • Lunch or Brunch - 11:30am-2pm

     • Dinner – 5-8:00pm

As always, our expectation is that you will treat Winthrop dining hall and custodial staff with the utmost respect; please bus your own trays, do not leave trash for others to clean up, and always be courteous and kind in your interactions with others.

Bagged Lunch Option

• For the bagged meals there will have a "fly-by" setup at breakfast for students to build their own bags. At the station will be a selection of freshly made sandwiches and wraps, chips, cookies, hummus cups, baby carrots and a beverage selection along with other options such as treats. 

• Reusable insulted lunch bags will be provided. 

• Any students with allergies we will be accommodated. 

• Anyone using the fly-by bagged meal option will have to swipe their cards with the checker. If you do not use the fly-by option, a sit down lunch at Winthrop will also be provided.

Laundry

Laundry service is available in the basement of Winthrop; machines can be operated either with quarters or by loading Crimson Cash onto your HUID. Instructions for Crimson Cash can be found here. Please set a timer for your laundry so you don’t forget it and to be respectful of others who want to use the machines.

Mail

Due to the uneven service during the summer and problems with lost packages, receiving postal mail during the summer is discouraged. However, if necessary, you will have a temporary summer Harvard mailing address assigned to you. That address will be made available to you in early June.

Regular term-time mail should NOT be forwarded to Winthrop House or your summer Harvard mail address. Please have such mail forwarded to your permanent home address. 

Please plan for any summer mail and packages to arrive on Monday, June 10, 2024 or later.
