The Holiday Lecture is going virtual this year! After many years of in-person fun at Harvard and Princeton, we are taking the lecture on-line for 2020. This Zoom webinar designed for family participation will be about an hour in length, and will include cool demonstrations, short in-home activities, and interactive questions. See below for some instructions on how to make the lecture fun at home.
You will receive a unique zoom link for your family, so if you would like to invite other families, please send them to this registration link to register.
Closed captioning and American Sign Language interpreters will be available during the presentation. If you have any questions or require any additional accommodations, please let us know in your zoom registration, or email us at harvardprinceton.holidaylecture@gmail.com.
We will generate a word cloud of words that describe materials. Materials have many properties, including their texture, appearance, how they respond to light or temperature, how they absorb energy, etc. For example, some types of wood are hard, some are flexible. Pick another material and think of one word to describe it. During the lecture, see if you can find your word!
We will also select some photos of families with a material of choice for a collage in the powerpoint during parts of the presentation. Other photos will be posted to our website. See if you can find yourself in the presentation!
You will need a google account to sign into the form.
Even though we will be on-line, we'd like to make the lecture as interactive as possible. You can gather some or all of these items to do your own experiments during the lecture:
Some uncooked spaghetti noodles
A metal paper clip (no plastic coating)
A metal frying pan
A plastic cutting board
Ice cubes
Gelatin (commonly known as Jello) prepared the night before (see below).
Pick you favorite gelatin product (commonly known Jello brand is popular in the U.S.), and look at the directions. Most recipes require heating the water to boiling before adding the gelatin powder.
Make one recipe according to the package directions.
Make a second recipe using only HALF of the water.
Make a third recipe using TWICE as much water.
Set in refrigerator for 4 hours or more.
Note: There are vegan alternatives to gelatin but we haven't tested them yet for this experiment. Stay tuned!
