What is Work Based Learning?
Students in the WBL program graduate from high school with real-world work experience. They leave high school armed with work skills and community service/volunteer experience, a professional resume and career portfolio, interviewing skills, and the ability to make clear, well thought out decisions about their career aspirations. In addition to work experience, leadership development, as well as career and college exploration, at least 90% of WBL students receive college acceptances and attend 2- and 4-year colleges or universities. Our students have taken HONORS and AP classes. These students also actively participate in our nationally recognized Career and Technical Education Student Associations (DECA, FBLA, FCCLA, Girls Who Code, HOSA).

Seniors only
Student workplace must meet all requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
All paid positions must meet requirements for minimum wage, overtime, child labor, equal pay, and applicable tax withholding.
1099s positions require a copy of the company's Business License, coordinator's approval, and approved mentor.
Home Employment, Door Dash, GrubHub, Uber Driver, and working for a parent are not accepted as a form of employment.

Please place all paperwork in the Work-Based Learning Box located outside the Attendance Office. All applicants will be notified by the August 30th if they have been accepted into the Fall 2024 WBL program.

Complete WBL – Pre-registration Form -Online
Print and Complete WBL Application and Teacher Recommendation. I will be verifying attendance and tardiness. Please note excessive tardiness and unexcused absences will disqualify your application.
Please submit Application and Recommendation in the Work-Based Learning Box outside attendance office. Please do not come to my office to submit paperwork.
There will be additional paperwork once you have completed steps 1-3. CHECK your SCHOOL EMAIL Daily!

About me
I am Franchesca Thompson serving as the Career Academy Coach and Work-Based Learning Coordinator for South Gwinnett High School. My job provides me the opportunity to formalize a structured framework that prepares students for their postsecondary life by getting them on a path for a future that begins prior to graduation from high school. I enjoy collaborating with industry partners and the community to provide students with the optimal learning experience. My goal is to make sure that every student at South Gwinnett High School is committed to a personalized learning plan that leads to a fulfilling career!
