We would like to invite everyone to International Night on Thursday, November 21 from 5:30-7:00 P.M. Come explore cultures from around the world while listening to music created by CMS Music Technology students that represent the musical traditions of those cultures!
We finished up our International Music Project in the beginning of October. Students chose a region of the world or a specific country to research the musical traditions of that culture. They created a short slide show to present to the class explaining that music tradition including different types of instruments and how a variety of musical elements are used in that culture. Next, students composed a piece of music representing that part of the world using Logic Pro. The results were wonderful! I have selected three amazing projects to showcase in our newsletter. 14 additional student compositions will also be on display at the Coleman M.S. International Night on Thursday, November 21 (see attached slideshow that will be on display throughout International Night).
I would like to invite all students to join us that evening to display their work at this celebration. The CMS cafeteria will be divided up into different continents with displays, traditional food dishes, and any Music Technology students who would like to participate. I have created a google form determine how many Music Technology students will need space to set up a chromebook to present to visitors to that area. Please sign up here if your student would like to participate.

Harmony and Melody
All grade levels have been exploring the musical elements of pitch, melody, and harmony. Students are learning to create chord progressions using a variety of digital tools and compose melodies to create completely original works of music.
6th Grade
6th Grade students have been using a tool in Soundtrap that enables students to select the order of chords that they would like to use in a chord progression. Students then learned how to use our MIDI controllers for real-time recording their melodies over the harmony part. Next, we composed original drum beats and learned how to add a bass line.
7th Grade
7th Grade students have been exploring the genre of the blues. In addition to learning about the history of the genre, we have been learning about musical form in the blues and composing our own 12-bar blues chord progressions using the Grageband app on iPad. Students have also learned to improvise and record melodies over the 12-bar blues harmony.
8th Grade
8th Grade students have also been using the Garageband app on iPad to explore chords and melodic development. Students learned how to record their own chord progressions, melodies, drums, and bass to create songs.
Please consider following our Soundcloud page. We currently have 77 tracks that were created by Coleman students dating back to 2020, and we are adding more each month. The purpose of this page is to get students' music out of the classroom and into the world. Students work hard on their projects and deserve to be heard. We have had over 4,000 listens since the start of the page and we would really appreciate your help in sharing the music from CMS Music Technology!

As a reminder, all student work is accessible on their Soundtrap page from home and projects can be exported as mp3 or wav files to be played on any device. Please support your student by asking to hear what they are working on!
The Music Technology program at Coleman Middle School is designed to develop student creativity and expression through music composition and to prepare students with the technology skills necessary for future opportunities.
