7th Grade Newsletter
May 15-19, 2023
With Teacher Appreciation Week around the corner, please take a minute to thank your child's teachers for all their hard work!
MATH
Standard Math students have begun Unit 8 Numbers. While this is an introduction to eight grade math, the concepts build upon students' prior knowledge of powers or exponents, fractions, and decimals.
In this unit, students will apply the properties (laws or rules) of integer exponents to generate equivalent numerical expressions; evaluate square roots of perfect squares up to an including 625 and cube roots of perfect cubes up to and included 1000 and -1000; compare and contrast rational and irrational numbers; understand informally that every number has a decimal expansion; for rational numbers show that the decimal expansion repeats eventually, and convert a decimal expansion into a rational number; use rational approximations of irrational numbers to compare the size of irrational numbers, locate them approximately on a number line, and estimate the value of expressions.
Students will have a CFA on or before May 12 and a Common Assessment the following week. All work and helpful resources are found on students' Math eClass course page and/or the teacher's Google classroom. Students have 24-hour access to both.
LANGUAGE ARTS
In language arts, the students just finished Unit 5, which explored the world of sports. The students are answering the following essential question after each selection, "How do sports bring together friends, families, and communities?" In this unit, the students participated in a book tasting involving sports fiction novel to pique their interest in the new unit, made baseball cards, worked in groups to do an objective summary on the psychology of video game design, read poems that include different perspectives and wrote descriptive poems based on their favorite sport. They took two CFA's that showed their growth in reading comprehension, citing textual evidence, vocabulary, interactions between story elements, objective summaries, etc. They reviewed for the Unit 5 Common Assessment upon returning from Spring Break. The students took the Unit 5 Common Assessment on April 14th. They began Unit 6 on April 17th. In this unit, they will explore how and why people work to change societies and the communities in which they live.
