The Spartan Band program at Saeger Middle School serves an average of 200 to 220 students each school year in six classes and four extracurricular ensembles. The Spartan Beginning Band is divided into four classes of like instruments - clarinets, trumpets, trombones/euphoniums, and flutes/percussion. After completion of Beginning Band, students may enroll in the Seventh Grade Band and then the Eighth Grade Band, which both meet daily in full ensembles. Students in full ensemble classes are provided with bi-weekly masterclasses with professional musicians, and a continually growing number of Saeger students are enrolled in private lessons.
Outside of the school day, seventh and eighth grade band members at Saeger are eligible to participate in our extracurricular ensembles. Students may audition for placement into our two jazz ensembles, the Saeger Jazz Band and the Saeger Jazz Workshop. For over a decade, Saeger has been home to the Spartan Community Band - a near 150 member ensemble comprised of seventh and eighth grade band students, high school band members from FHC, band family members, teachers, staff, principals, community members, and alumni of the program.
Saeger Band students are also active in the St. Louis Metro District #8 Honor Bands. They regularly participate in campus activities with the band program at Francis Howell Central High School. Eighth Grade Nights with the FHC Spartan Regiment and the Spartan A-Band, the annual Night of Percussion concert, and shared concert appearances are some of our favorite events of the year!
