Tobacco Free Campus

Emporia State Is Tobacco-Free!

A cleaner campus. Cleaner air. Respect for all.

These are the primary reasons that the Emporia State University campus community pushed to become tobacco free, joining many other Kansas universities and community colleges who have made the move.

Across the United States, more than 1,400 college and university campuses are smoke free, and 995 of those are fully tobacco free.

Did you know:

  • ESU Facilities staff spend hours cleaning trash from cigarettes and chewing tobacco from campus grounds and water fountains?
  • Cigarette butts can take up to 10 years to decompose?
  • When campus squirrels ingest tobacco refuse, they can become extremely ill or die?
  • Cigarettes are one of the top five causes of campus fires?

We want everyone on campus — students, faculty, staff, visitors and guests — to enjoy a respectful, safe and healthy environment. Our policy requests that everyone on the ESU campus refrain from using tobacco products on campus, either inside buildings or outside.

This includes cigarettes, (cloves, bidis, kreteks), chewing tobacco (spit, spitless, smokeless, chew, snuff, and snus), cigars and cigarillos, hookah and hookah smoked products, pipes, blunts, smokeless tobacco, and electronic cigarettes or e-cigarettes as well as any product that simulates these products.
