List of Available Scholarships for 2020 - 2021 Academic Year

Graduate Scholarships

The following scholarships are available to Graduate students in the Department of Social Sciences for the academic year 2020-21. Listed below are the amount of each award, the selection criteria, and the topics for the application essay.


Milo M. Mathews Scholarship for Social Sciences graduate students - $400

  • Specific Criteria: Student must be “academically superior” and exhibit financial need.
  • Essay: Describe your Master’s thesis topic and discuss how this scholarship will help you complete your degree.
  • Applications must be submitted by February 21, 2020, via email or hard copy, to Dr. Ellen Hansen or Dr. Darla Mallein

Undergraduate Scholarships

The following scholarships are available to Undergraduate students in the Department of Social Sciences for the academic year 2020-21. Listed below are the amount of each award, the selection criteria, and the topics for the application essay.


NEW FOR 2020 - 2021: Robert D. Linder Scholarship $1,000

  • Specific Criteria: Recipient must be a history major, a Kansas resident, and have a GPA of at least 3.5.
  • Brief Essay: Discuss your interest in and plans for your major. Why should you be selected for this scholarship?

Guy Buzzard - $200

  • Specific Criteria: The recipient must be a full-time undergraduate student at ESU majoring in one of the social sciences disciplines, with an interest in and focus on geography.
  • Brief Essay: Describe your interest in geography. Why do you think you should be selected for this scholarship?


Flenjte – two awards, one of $1,000 and one of $900

  • Specific Criteria: The scholarship is awarded to a junior or senior undergraduate student majoring in political science with an emphasis on American politics.
  • Brief essay: Describe your interest in American politics. Why should you be selected for this scholarship?

Moreland - $300

  • Specific Criteria: The scholarship will go to a Kansas resident who has a minimum GPA of 3.0, is a junior or senior student in one of the social sciences disciplines and who exhibits financial need.
  • Brief essay: Discuss your interest in the social sciences. Why should you be selected for this scholarship?

Rich and Phillips - $400

  • Specific Criteria: The scholarship is awarded to a full-time undergraduate student with a minimum GPA of 3.50, who is majoring in a social sciences discipline or special education.
  • Brief essay: Discuss your interest in and plans for your major. Why should you be selected for this scholarship?

Captain Rives - $400

  • Specific Criteria: Student must be specializing in archival work.
  • Brief essay: Describe your interest in archival work and why you think you should be selected as a recipient of this scholarship.

Donald & Marguerite Riggin Shepherd* - $1,000 (up to 10 awards will be made)

  • Specific Criteria: Student must be a sophomore majoring in history or a junior pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Education with a major in Social Sciences; must have an overall GPA of 3.0 and a 3.5 GPA in the course work for the major.
  • Brief essay: Describe why you hope to get this scholarship and how it will advance your career goals in history and/or social sciences education.

**SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS FOR COMPLETING APPLICATION FOR THE RIGGIN SHEPHERD SCHOLARSHIP:

      • Students must provide current, unofficial ESU transcript with application.
      • Student must ask TWO social science faculty to complete the Faculty Recommendation form.
