PROGRAM DESCRIPTION
Program Description & Vision
The Modern Languages Program is dedicated to preparing our ESU students for the 21st century multilingual society.
The United States is the second most populous Spanish-speaking country.
Spanish is the second most spoken language in the United States, with 60 million Spanish speakers.
Spanish is the fourth most spoken language worldwide, with over 600 million speakers.
Our program is committed to developing our students’ linguistic and cultural competencies and prepares them to enter the transnational and global workforce where bilingual Spanish-English health care, business, and media professionals are in high demand and earn higher salaries over the course of their career.
Students who participate in community service learning projects, summer and semester study abroad programs, and who complete course work in the target language set themselves up for success as bilingual professionals.
ONLINE & BLENDED Course Delivery
Our program offers introductory level Spanish courses both in a blended format, face-to-face and online, and fully online course offerings. We also have a Spanish as a Heritage Language course that meets the needs of our bilingual and Heritage speakers to develop their skills in the areas of reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
Our intermediate level courses are offered every semester, both face-to-face and online. It is possible to complete the Minor in Modern Language's concentration Spanish or the Second program of Study online, and most of our advanced level Spanish content area course offerings are offered online as well.
DOUBLE MAJOR IN MODERN LANGUAGES/SPANISH
Students who place into Spanish 313 Spanish Language & Culture III or Spanish 314 Spanish Heritage Language & Culture can enroll in ONE Spanish course per semester and complete the degree requirements for a Major in Languages, Literary Studies, and Writing within four academic years/eight semesters.

Many courses in the Modern Languages Program are offered every semester and online, both during the regular academic year and the summer. It is possible for students to complete a minor in three semesters and a double major in six semesters, taking one Spanish course per semester.
Modern Languages Program Placement Procedures
Students should contact the Director of Modern Languages and take the placement test in CANVAS. Students may be about to place into a higher level of Spanish, which may reduce the required hours towards degree completion.
