Fall 2022 Call for Submissions

Participate in the 3rd annual Food Art & Creativity Contest! We invite you to take some time on and around World Food Day to reflect on what food means to you, create your own food art, and share it with the community as part of Emporia First Friday in November!

What Counts as Food Art & Creativity

Be creative and draw on food that represents you – your cultural heritage or food that reflects your family story. Check out the list below for ideas:

  • Photo of a self-portrait or scene made out of food

  • Photo of a meal you just cooked and of which you are proud

  • Photo of a painting of food or a painting with food in it

  • Photo of a drawing of food or a drawing with food in it

  • Photo of a sculpture of food or made from food or food-related materials

  • Photo of your tattoo that is food-related

  • Photo of food you have grown

  • Poem inspired by or about food

  • Flash fiction (500-2000 words) short story inspired by experiences with food

  • Flash creative nonfiction (500-2000 words) essay about experiences with food

  • Zine related to food, the food system, or food insecurity

  • Comic inspired by or about food

  • Recipe you developed or that comes from your family

Any medium or format is welcome, so long as it relates to food and you submit your entry as a digital photo or PDF. Preferred sizing is 11x14 inches.

Who Can Participate

The contest is open to all members of the public living, working, and/or attending school in Lyon County, KS. All ages are welcome to enter. Entries can be submitted in any language. You do NOT have to be a professional artist or writer to be a part of this show!

How To Submit

To submit your entry, please email a digital photo or PDF of your piece, your name, contact information, the title of the piece, and a brief description of your ingredients and/or inspiration to eatinitiative@gmail.com. Please use the subject line “2022 Food Art & Creativity.”

All entries must be received NO LATER than October 24, 2022, at 5 p.m.

Feel free to also share your art on your own social media, using hashtags like #WorldFoodDay, #EmporiaStrong, #EmporiaEats, #EmporiaFirstFriday, or #SwarmHunger.

Judging

An album of all submissions will be posted on the Lyon County Food & Farm Council’s Facebook page. The photos with the most likes will receive awards. Winners will be notified.

Selected entries will be displayed at Chi Em Eats for the Emporia First Friday Artwalk on November 4, 2022.

Permissions

Entrants assert that they either own or have the rights to use all content in their submissions. Entrants using third-party material (i.e., material not owned by entrant) must have received explicit permission from the owner to use these materials. The burden of determining that any material is not protected by copyright, trademark, rights of privacy, publicity, or any other proprietary rights rests with the entrant. The entrant shall bear the sole liability for any damage resulting from any infringement of copyrights, proprietary rights, or any other harm resulting from such a submission.

In addition, entrants grant the organizers non-exclusive rights to print and/or display submissions online and as part of the local exhibits associated with the Food Art & Creativity Contest.
