Christmas Adverts in UK and USA

Sainsbury´s - one of the biggest supermarkets in the UK - released this World War 1 style advert to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the first world war starting. It features the famous game of football that took place on the frontline between German and British soldiers. It was made in partnership with the Royal British Legion. 

The release of the John Lewis Christmas advert is a big moment in the UK as it has come to be associated with the beginning of the festive season. 

Irn Bru, the favourite soft drink of Scotland, made this tongue in cheek version of the famous Christmas song 'Walking In The Air'. A very funny song lyrically 'he nicked my Irn Bru and let go of my hand', it also features some of the most famous landmarks of Scotland. How many can you identify? 

This Christmas advert from Boots, a chain of pharmacies in the UK, highlights the different ways that people celebrate Christmas in the UK. Focussing on a family that work in the NHS (National Health Service), it shows how hard people work in the NHS and in a way gives thanks to them. Christmas adverts about different themes have become more common in recent years in the UK.

This advert from John Lewis, a popular department store in the UK, raises awareness of loneliness amongst older people at Christmas. John Lewis teamed up with Age UK to draw attention to this issue in their Christmas advert. Also featuring the Oasis song "Half the World Away".

A famous advert from Marks and Spencer, a high-end supermarket, in 2006 focussing solely on the quality of their food. The famous tagline "This isn´t just" is very famous in the UK now because of this advert. 

Advertisements from the United States

In this commercial we have a polar bear wanting to get a drink while watching TV.  Unfortunately it runs into some balance issues while going outside.  This is a classic example of a Coca-Cola ad around Christmas time.  They usually have at least one famous advertisement every year. 

In 2013 mobile phone technology was starting to become similar to what it is today.  There were many stigmas surrounding mobile phone usage and time spent on the phones, especially with younger people.  Apple released this commercial as a means to play with expectations.  It's a very moving example and a great story of time spent with family.

The USPS is the national postal service carrier for the United States.  They always place an emphasis on delivering in whatever conditions they are presented with.  Here we can see the varying climates and terrains of the US in the Christmas season.  This is a quintessential Christmas ad and you would probably see many examples similar to this in a normal day.  

Folger's is a famous coffee brand from the United States.  Folger's specializes in instant or pre-prepared coffee.  In this ad there is a family being reunited after some time apart.  It's a nice surprise and is super sentimental feeling, however old it may be.
