Valentine's Day is much more popular in the United States than it is in Spain. Similar to Halloween, many students have heard of Valentine's Day, but don't celebrate or don't celebrate the way that many Americans do. Most people celebrate Valentine's Day in the U.S. People celenrate with their significant others, families and even friends.Â
In addition to teaching students about how American's celebrate, I decided to teach film related vocabulary and created a writing activity. I shared some of my favorite romantic-comedies with the students and asked them to share their favorite movies or series that are about love or friendship. After exchanging favorites, I showed students how to make Valentine's Day cards.
The Valentine's Day card is naturally a good way to practice writing skills, but it is also an important activity because it shows students the proper format for a card or letter. Students learned appropriate greetings and and closings. They chose someone to address the card to and wrote a Valentine's Day message.
As an instructor I believe that it is important to honor students' artistic abilities in addition to their language skills.Prizes were given for the best written, the most endearing and the most creative cards.
