今、人間活動が引き起こしている気候変動はどれくらい異常なのか？ / How unusual is the climate change caused by human activities?

気候変動と、それに伴い激甚化する極端気象への対応は、私たちの人間社会にとって重要な課題です。私たちの研究室では、過去・現在・将来にわたる気候変動や極端気象を対象に、気候モデル・地球システムモデルによるシミュレーションと観測、そして人類による機器観測が始まる以前の気候・気象を反映した間接指標を組み合わせて研究しています。

地球はこれまでにも、現在とは大きく異なる気候を経験してきました。そうした過去の歴史・経験を踏まえながら、将来の気候や気象をより正確に予測し、人間社会や地球環境への影響を明らかにすることを目指しています。

Climate change and increases in extreme weather are serious threats to human society and the environment. In our lab, we study climate changes and extreme weather events across the past, present, and future by combining climate and Earth system models with observational data, as well as proxy records that reflect climate conditions prior to the era of instrumental observations.

The Earth has experienced climates very different from those of today. Drawing on this deep historical record, our mission is to improve the future projection of climate and weather, and to elucidate their impacts on human society and the environment.

当研究室では、地質時代から未来まで、さまざまな時間スケールにおける地球の気候変動や環境変動の再現と現象解明に取り組んでいます。気候モデルによる過去や将来の気候・気象シミュレーションに興味がある方はもちろん、古気候・古環境プロキシの解釈に挑みたい方を歓迎します。

Our laboratory investigates Earth’s climate and environmental change across timescales ranging from geological history to the future. We welcome students interested in climate and weather simulations using climate and hydrological models, as well as those interested in the interpretation of paleoclimate and paleoenvironmental proxies.

If you wish to join our lab as a master’s or doctoral student, please apply through the entrance examination for the Department of Civil Engineering, Graduate School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo.

Undergraduate students can join the lab for their bachelor’s thesis through the Hydrosphere Environmental Group in the Department of Civil Engineering, School of Engineering, The University of Tokyo. We also occasionally recruit Student Research Assistants. We welcome highly motivated students who are eager to engage in research early in their academic careers.
