• 論文の進捗を共有してディスカッションする

• 学生中心で質問・コメントをしあう

• 研究対象者・協力者の紹介、情報交換などのピアサポート

• 各コースでの報告会の準備・練習の機会として活用する

• その他―誰も発表しない週には下記のようなレクチャーやワークショップを行うことも可能です。企画アイディア随時募集中です。

  • ミニレクチャー“◯◯移民について”（例えば、「日本における日系ブラジル人移民第2世代に関する概要」「イギリスにおけるムスリム移民女性について」など）

  • ゲストを招いてお話いただくような回があっても良い。

  • ゲストセミナー：卒業生を招いてキャリア（就職・進学）について話してもらう、海外からの客員研究員に研究について発表してもらうなどなど

  • Study skill, Tipsなどの情報交換（例えば、文献整理の仕方、データ保存、PC壊れた時のための対処法、記録のつけ方など）

  • フィールドワークを行う上での注意点、研究倫理について話す回

Objectives of the writing group

• To share and discuss the progress of your paper with other members

• To exchange questions and comments with each other

• To provide peer support by exchanging information about the fieldwork including target place and people

• To use as an opportunity to prepare for and practice presentations in each course

• Other - When no one is giving a presentation, it is also possible to hold lectures or workshops like the ones below. We always welcome new ideas.

  • Mini-lectures on ‘◯◯ immigration’ (e.g. ‘An overview of the second generation of Japanese-Brazilian immigrants in Japan’, ‘Muslim immigrant women in the UK’, etc.)

  • There could be a session where we invite a guest to give a talk.

  • Guest seminars: inviting graduates to talk about their careers (employment, further study), inviting visiting researchers from overseas to give presentations on their research, etc.

  • Information exchange on study skills, tips, etc. (e.g. how to organize literature, data storage, what to do when your PC breaks, how to keep records, etc.)

  • Sessions on points to note when doing fieldwork and research ethics

授業やライティンググループに参加する意味について（2026.06.23加筆）

週末に学会に参加し、あらためて授業やライティンググループの重要性について考えました。やはり自分自身の研究だけでなく、他者の研究に触れ、議論することからも多くを学ぶことの重要性を再認識しました。そこで、卒業論文や修士論文、研究プロジェクトに取り組む皆さんに向けて、いくつか共有したいことがあります。

まず、所属コースの過去の卒業論文や修士論文を必ず何本か読んでみてください。

良い論文がどのような構成で書かれているのか、どのように議論を組み立てているのか、学ぶための最も良い方法の一つです。特に、背景説明や先行研究レビュー、先行研究からリサーチクエスチョンへのつなげ方、方法論の説明（妥当性や限界に関する議論）を読んでみてください。

実際の論文審査の際、実は筆者である学生がこれまでに論文を十分に読んできたかどうかは論文の冒頭を読むだけで比較的すぐに分かります。

もちろん、文章にオリジナリティがあることは大切です。しかし、多くの場合、十分に論文を読んでいない人の文章は、学術的な書き方の作法を身につけていないために、どこか不自然でプロフェッショナルではない印象を与えます。その意味でも、過去の論文から学ぶことを強く勧めます。

同時に、剽窃やAIツールの利用には十分注意してください。

最近、他大学でAIを使って参考文献リストを作成した結果、実際には存在しない文献が参考文献リストに含まれていたという事例があったと聞きました。このような問題は、論文の取り下げだけでなく、複数の教員による調査、委員会の設置、著者への聞き取り、処分の検討といった事態につながることがあります。投稿論文や学位論文であれば、その影響はさらに大きくなります。

重要なのは、こうした問題が必ずしも悪意や故意から生じるわけではないということです。締切に追われるなかでAIを利用し、その内容を十分に確認しなかったというだけでも起こり得ます。これは誰にでも起こり得ることです。だからこそ、私自身も含めて、細部に至るまで丁寧に確認する姿勢を大切にしましょう。

最後に、授業でのディスカッションやライティンググループを積極的に活用してください。研究テーマが異なっていても、他の人の研究から学べることはたくさんあります。たとえば、「その方法で本当に研究課題に答えられるのか」「重要な概念は明確に定義されているか」「分析枠組みはあるか」「研究の意義は十分に説明されているか」といった点です。こうした問いは、多くの分野やテーマに共通するものです。論文や研究を評価する目を養うことや、生産的なアドバイス・質問を考えることが、自分の研究をよくするうえでも役立ちます。

論文の質は、自分自身の研究にどれだけ時間をかけたかだけではなく、他の人の研究を読み、議論し、そこからどれだけ学んだかも大きく影響します。扱うテーマが異なっていても、論理構成や議論の展開、研究の進め方については互いに学び合うことができます。また、皆さん、研究以外のことでも忙しいと思いますので、毎回の授業やライティンググループに出席するのは難しいかもしれません。ですが、議論に参加し続けることで、確実に論文をよくする視点は増えますので、授業やライティンググループに参加する目的を意識しておいていただけると良いと思います。

Some thoughts about the meaning of attending the classes and the writing group sessions（added on 23 June 2026)

After attending a conference this past weekend, I found myself reflecting once again on the importance of classes and writing groups. I would like to share a few thoughts that may be helpful as you continue working on your theses and research projects. 

First, make sure to read several undergraduate theses and master's theses from your program. This is one of the best ways to learn what a well-written thesis looks like in terms of structure, argumentation, and academic writing. In particular, I recommend you to read the background and literature review, the transition from the literature review to the research question, and the methodology section (including discussions of validity and limitations). 

Actually, when we evaluate the thesis, it is often immediately apparent whether a student has read previous theses when looking at the introductory part. 

Originality in writing is, of course, important. However, in many cases, students who have not read enough academic work tend to produce writing that appears unprofessional, not because they are original, but because they have not yet learned the conventions of academic writing. Learning from existing theses is therefore highly recommended. 

At the same time, please be extremely careful about plagiarism and the use of AI tools. I recently heard of a case in other university where a student used AI to generate a reference list, resulting in the inclusion of articles that did not actually exist. Such cases can lead not only to the withdrawal of a thesis or paper, but also to formal investigations involving multiple faculty members, committees, interviews with the author, and discussions of possible disciplinary action. In the case of journal submissions or degree theses, the consequences can be even more serious.

Importantly, these problems do not necessarily arise from malicious intent. They can happen when someone is under time pressure and relies on AI-generated content without carefully verifying the details. Any of us could make such mistakes. Therefore, I encourage everyone—including myself—to check all aspects of our work carefully and thoroughly. 

Finally, I hope you will make active use of class discussions and writing groups. Even when research topics differ, there are many common lessons that can be learned from examining other people's work. For example, does the chosen method actually answer the research question? Are the key concepts clearly defined? Is there an analytical framework? Is the significance of the study clearly articulated? These are issues that apply across many fields and topics. The quality of a thesis depends not only on one's own research but also on how much one learns from reading and discussing the work of others. Even when the subject matter differs, we can all learn from one another about logical structure, argumentation, and the overall process of conducting good research. I understand that many of you have commitments beyond your research, and it may be difficult to attend every class or writing group session. So, I just want to encourage you to remember the points above as the purpose to participate in classes and writing group sessions. Over time, it will make a substantial difference in the quality of your work.
