SMS Physical Education

Dear Parents,

As a part of Physical Education, your student will receive Health Education as well as go through a program called Strengths Direction. Strengths Direction is an action agenda to help students recognize, explore, and activate their strengths based on their results from a individual online Clifton Youth Strengths Explorer survey. Strengths is a talent assessment for middle school students based on the principles of the highly effective Gallup Strengths Finder assessment.

Through a series of short weekly explorations, students will develop their top Strengths talents, build personal strengths portfolios, and learn to apply strengths both in their coursework and in their relationships with peers. Focusing on what’s strong, not what’s wrong.

In P.E. Each student will receive one minor grade (40%) and one major grade (60%) per week. Minor grades will be assessed based on dressing out and major grades will be assessed based on participation. Minor and major grades will be calculated as follows:

Minor Grade 40%

Number Earned

Percentage Equivalent (Weekly)

Number of Times Dressed Out in One Week

5 = 100%

4 = 90%

3 = 80%

2 = 70%

1 = 60%

0 = 50%

Major Grade 60%

Number Earned

Percentage Equivalent (Weekly)

Number of Times Participated in One Week

5 = 100%

4 = 90%

3 = 80%

2 = 70%

1 = 60%

0 = 50%

Consequences for not dressing out and/participating:

1st week - email parent

2nd week - call parent

3rd week - issue detention

4th week - office referral

Students will be assessed in participation everyday. Should a student need to reassess, they may do so by appointment with their P.E. Coach or Health Teacher. Physical Education will be broken down into units that will last 1-4 weeks. An example of a unit would be basketball, flag football, volleyball, badminton, ultimate frisbee, etc.

P.E. Guidelines

Your student will receive a P.E. locker with a padlock in which they will leave their P.E. uniform in every day.

Students are expected to keep up with their locks. If any lock is lost, their will be a $5 recovery fee.

Students will need to lock ANY and ALL valuables that will fit in their 12” x 15” x 11” lockers.

Backpacks and binders will not fit in their PE locker.

Students are required to take their uniforms home on Fridays to wash and return them on Mondays. If you encounter any issues with washing weekly, please contact us.

Students are required to wear closed toed, rubber bottomed sneakers every day in P.E. If students do not have appropriate shoes, they will not be able to participate and points will be taken off for not dressing out as well as not participating.

If your student has asthma, they will need to bring their inhaler to P.E. everyday.

If your student becomes injured or sick to where they cannot participate, we will need a doctor’s note on file stating their condition, how long they are out, and when they are scheduled to return. Please ask for two copies from your doctor, one for the front office, and one for the coach’s office.

Parent notes for injury or sickness are only valid for 2 days. After two days, your student will need to have proof of a doctor’s appointment.

Items that are required for P.E.:

Towel

Wipes

Closed toed, rubber bottomed sneakers

Grey shirt
