Dear Third Grade Families,
Our Focus
In this nine weeks your student will be learning how to represent and solve multiplication and division problems as well as developing an understanding of the relationship between these two operations.
Instructional Approach
Students will develop an understanding of the meanings of multiplication and division of whole numbers by using models and solving problems involving equal sized groups. They will compare solution strategies to gain a deeper understanding of the relationship between multiplication and division. Third graders are expected to recall multiplication and division facts with automaticity by the end of the year. Automaticity is defined as one fact in 3-5 seconds.
Family Support
You can help your child in several ways.
Sincerely,
The Third Grade Math Team
Factors- numbers that you multiply together to get another number
Product- the answer when two or more numbers are multiplied together
Dividend ÷ Divisor = Quotient
Dividend- the amount that you want to divide up (Example: in 12 ÷ 3 =4, 12 is the dividend)
Divisor- the number you divide by (Example: in 12 ÷ 3 = 4, 3 is the divisor)
Quotient- the answer you get after dividing one number by another number (Example: in 12 ÷ 3 = 4, 4 is the quotient)
24 x 3 = 72
15 x 6=
“I multiplied in my head 10 x 6 and got 60. Then I multiplied 5 x 6 and got 30. I added the two products and got 90.”
160 + 32 = 192
Therefore, 24 x 8 = 192
