Course Description:
In Anatomy and Physiology, students conduct laboratory and field investigations, use scientific methods during investigations, and make informed decisions using critical thinking and scientific problem solving. Students in Anatomy and Physiology study a variety of topics, including the structure and function of the human body and the interaction of body systems for maintaining homeostasis.
Course Schedule:
1st 9 Weeks Orientation and Systems, Cells & Tissues, Integumentary System
2nd 9 Weeks Skeletal System, Muscular System, Nervous System, Senses of the Body
3rd 9 Weeks Endocrine System, Cardiovascular System and Blood, Lymphatic and Immune System
4th 9 Weeks Respiratory System, Digestive System, Urinary System, Reproductive System
Keys to success
The following guidelines are established to allow you to learn as much as possible and to help make our time together enjoyable.
1. Ask questions. That is what science is all about!
2. Be prepared. Bring notebook, pencil/pen, every day. You may leave your textbook at home unless specifically requested to bring it.
3. Be here and be on time. The tardy policy will be followed. If you must be absent, it is your responsibility to see me about making up missed work. District policy for missed class is the number of days you missed, plus one day.
4. Honesty is expected. An automatic zero is given for cheating or for knowingly allowing someone else to cheat (homework included). Parents will be contacted about any cheating incident.
5. Regular attendance in class contributes largely to your academic success. Attending a class involves more than merely filling a desk; it requires your active involvement during the learning process. You don’t want to miss any Anatomy!
Cell Phones
No Cell Phones will be permitted. Out of sight, out of mind works for me. Please keep cell phones in your backpacked, zipped up and away during class. During quizzes and tests, cell phones will be required to only be in you backpack, and all backpacks will be at the front of the classroom.
Required Textbooks and Materials:
Online Textbook: Openstax
Pen/Pencil, a binder to put your handouts in
Grading Policy:
Minor Summative (quizzes, labs) 40%
Major Summative (exams, projects) 60%
Grading will be done on a point system for individual assignments where the number of points possible for an assignment varies with the difficulty of the task. Each unit will have 1-2 labeling or vocabulary quizzes. The quizzes are not able to be reassessed. When you take your test, you will see the same or similar questions and that will count as your quiz reassessment.
**Cheating on any assignment will be voided and the appropriate disciplinary action will be taken. The student will have an opportunity to demonstrate knowledge of the assignment to make up this grade. Academic dishonesty is strictly prohibited. Grades will be updated weekly and can be viewed by parents and students using the Home Access Center (please see the district website www.dentonisd.org for further details). Please refer to http://bit.ly/2BhBZ3c for the District Grading Policy
Class Attendance & Participation:
Texas law requires students ages 6-19 to attend school each day that instruction is provided. Additionally, Texas law requires students to be in attendance at least 90% of the time to receive credit for the semester.
90% means a student cannot miss more than 8 days in a semester for a class that meets every day. Students in A/B classes cannot miss more than 4 days.
NOTE: For Seniors, attendance is one of the factors considered to be eligible to be exempt from Spring Semester Exams.
Tutorials
Human Anatomy and Physiology is a class that builds on itself. It is very important to master each topic, or the next topic will be difficult. Tutorials times are by appointment.
Labs:
Labs are a VERY important part of this course and vital to learning the information we cover during lectures. You will not be allowed to participate in labs UNTIL you and your parent/legal guardian have read and signed the safety contract. You will be assigned to a lab group, but you are responsible for completing your own work. Breaking lab safety rules will result in removal from the lab and a detention. Your grade will be determined based on your work during the lab as well as your post-lab data/analysis.
Dissections:
Dissections in class are not optional. We are planning on dissection multiple organs from sheep and cows. We will also have a large dissection of a pig.
Detentions:
Detentions will be assigned, when necessary, as a consequence of behavioral/academic concerns and will be served after school in my classroom. Office referrals will be written when necessary. Please refer to your Student Code of Conduct handbook.
Make-up Work:
When you are absent, it is YOUR responsibility to get your make-up work before or after class. You have the number of days you were absent plus one to make up the work you missed. If you missed a test, quiz, or lab, it is YOUR responsibility to make arrangements with me to make it up during tutorials. For labs and tests that are not made up, you will be given a “missing” until it is completed. Make-ups will NOT be given during class. It is also your responsibility to come in for tutoring if you do not understand a concept covered during your absence.
If a test was announced before your absence, you will be expected to take the test with the class when you return. Make-up tests will not be the same as the original. Make-up labs need to be scheduled within 3 school days of absence.
Consequences of breaking a rule
Warning
Meeting with teacher before or after school and parent notification
Student detention and parent notification
Referral to administrators. Any severe issues will be immediately sent to the administration.
If you choose to misbehave in the lab, you will be removed from the laboratory setting immediately and given a substantial, appropriate alternative assignment. Then, suitable disciplinary action will be taken.
Reassessment policy
The Science department at Braswell will have a consistent policy when it comes to reassessments. Students will have 4 days after the date of the exam to reassess. If a student wants to reassess, they must demonstrate have completed any work assigned and they will have to complete all the formative assessments assigned before the exam.
Parents:
Please contact me by email or phone and leave a message if you have any questions regarding your child’s progress in this course. The best way to reach me is through email since I have access to it when I am not in the room. I will not answer the phone unless it is during my conference period. I will respond as soon as possible.
Thank you for supporting your child’s effort in this class. Success in this course depends on your child completing all assigned homework, good class attendance, and attention to class instruction. Parents will need to sign the syllabus contract to acknowledge their acceptance of these policies. A separate lab safety contract will also require your signature.
I look forward to teaching your child! Thank you!
