Why Orchestra?


What are the benefits of participating in orchestra?

What instruments can I choose from?

You can choose the violin, viola, cello or bass (with teacher's permission).

Do I have to do orchestra all year?

Yes. If you start orchestra you must commit to the full year. Occasionally, students have asked to quit when it is difficult to learn new skills, but by the end of the year they are proud of their progress and are glad they didn’t quit.

How much do I have to practice?

Students are encouraged to practice each day. They may need to start out in 10 minute increments at the beginning of the year.

Can I do orchestra and still do other activities such as sports?

Of Course! Many orchestra students participate in a variety of different activities.

Is orchestra hard?

Yes and No. Learning to do something new can be challenging for some and it takes hard work but it is also a lot of fun!

If I do 5th grade orchestra do I have to do middle school orchestra?

No. Before you go to middle school you may choose a different elective if you decide orchestra is not for you. However, 5th grade orchestra is designed to prepare you for middle school orchestra. If you already know you will pursue a different elective in middle school, 5th grade orchestra might not be the best choice for you. If you are uncertain of your middle school plans, go ahead and give it a try.

What kinds of things do I get to do if I stay in orchestra after 5th grade?
