I am so glad to begin my journey at Nelson Elementary for another year of music-making, fun, and learning! I plan to implement various teaching strategies and activities that I learned over the summer that your students will love! On this website, you can find information about almost everything I do in my classroom. If something you're looking for is NOT on this page, please don't hesitate to email me at the address below
Here's to a new (school) year!

Hi there! My name is John Randolph Fitzpatrick, but around here I go by Mr. Fitz. I'm thrilled to be joining the Nelson Elementary community as your music teacher! This will be my fourth year teaching elementary music, and my first year at Nelson after teaching previously at Providence Elementary.
I hold a Bachelor of Music with a focus in Voice, am certified in EC–12 Music Education, and recently completed my Kodály Certification after three years of intensive training. I blend Kodály practices with elements of Music Learning Theory to create lessons that are structured, playful, and deeply musical. I believe music gives students a new vocabulary—a way to express themselves, listen differently, and find joy in creative learning.
In my classroom, we sing, move, play instruments, dance, and learn how to think musically with purpose and precision. I also direct our school choir, and outside of school, I run a children’s choir at my church, where I also arrange choral music. At my last school, our choir earned Superior ratings at NRH2O’s annual music festival two years in a row, and I’m excited to build on that success here at Nelson.
I became a music teacher because I saw the need for educators who are supportive, inclusive, and understanding—especially for students with diverse or special needs. My goal is to create a classroom where students feel safe being silly, respected for who they are, and challenged musically. I keep things engaging by using trending content and humor, and I aim to make every class feel like a meaningful experience.
If you ever have questions, feel free to reach out to me by email. Let’s make this a year full of music, creativity, and growth!
Everyone has to get their education from somewhere! For me, that was UNT! I attended UNT for five years as a music education major with a focus in voice, where I gained both theoretical and practical experience teaching a wide range of students from Pre-K to High school.
After graduation and my first year of teaching, I attended Midwestern State University's Kodaly Educator Program while teaching. There, I diligently studied under the tutelage of many renowned educators and professors for three years. As of summer 2025, I am now a fully certified Kodaly educator recognized by OAKE (Organization of American Kodaly Educators)
