IB DP Biology requires not just knowing biology but also applying its concepts to understanding and improving society. To that end (and to get a head start on one of our most difficult units - genetics), our summer assignment is to read the book The Violinist's Thumb by Sam Kean.
You can check out the book from a local library, purchase your own copy, or borrow an e-book from Internet Archive (you'll need to get a digital library card, but it's free; this website also doesn't work on district devices, so you'll need a different source if you're using a school chromebook).
Pay attention to the vocabulary in the book; there are quizizz flashcards and assessments for each chapter (including the introduction!) for you to practice recalling the definitions of some of the scientific vocabulary. You can choose to read first and use context clues (and the internet) to figure out meanings and then do the assignments. Or you could do the assignment first to become familiar with the words before reading each chapter. Work in a way that's best for your brain!
The quizizz are set to unlimited attempts, so feel free to correct mistakes and/or to practice identifying definitions more than once. The goal is to learn!
We will practice this vocab on our first day of class in August. We'll take a minor quiz on it on the second day of class and a major summative test on the third day of class. It should be an easy way to start the year with some super high grades!
A google doc with all the words is linked here.
