Phonics - This is the first step in reading. This is matching letters to sounds, breaking words apart into syllables, and changing sounds around to write words as correctly as possible. Why Phonics Matters
Reading - Big Kid Readers explore series books that introduce them to characters that become like their best friends. They use all the information in a nonfiction book to learn everything they can about a subject. Big Kid readers try as many new genres as they can because there is a book out there for everyone! Reading & Writing in 2nd Grade
Writing - 2nd grade writers use all their tools to spell words that look the way they sound. They write small moments about themselves, zooming in on the action and feelings of a very small seed story. They write informational books like experts, putting everything they know on a page. They also explore their opinion on things that matter, and learn to put those opinions on paper with reasons that make sense.
Math - Our biggest focus in math is problem solving using addition and subtraction up to 999. This will require learning about place value to 1,200 and how to regroup up and regroup down. But we will also study money, time, graphing, measurement, and fractions. Problem Solving Tips
Science - We will study the forms of and changes in matter. We'll also look at sound energy, earth and space, and become experts in prairie animals. In science, we make a claim, we use evidence from our observations, and then we give reasons why our evidence supports our claim. SciShow Kids
Social Studies - After learning about important government positions and other cultures and traditions, we will do our Biography unit in the winter. This is a special time when we put on our 2nd grade Living Museum! We will also be producers and consumers of goods in a pretend economy. Example of a Living Museum
