The Denton High School BBQ Team empowers students to gain self confidence by mastering lifelong cooking skills, fostering teamwork and excelling in challanging conditions. They compete at events with pride for school and community, cultivating a passion for barbecue.
The team walks through the courtyard before their trip to Burnet with a DHS State Send-off featuring Fillies and the POBC Drum Line.
The Barbecue Club at Denton High restarted in 2023 -2024 with only four members. Just one year later, the team competed through the National High School BBQ Association at regional competitions in Athens and Lake Dallas, advanced to state in Burnet, and on to Nationals in Kansas City, Missouri. They finished 26th, with their brisket placing eighth in the nation.
Over the summer, the team appeared live on WFAA’s Good Morning Texas, became Frenchy’s Famous and were recognized by the Denton ISD Board of Education.
The team meets monthly to smoke and grill. Meetings start by putting the slow cooking meats in the smoker, then grilling other items. Then the good part, TASTE TESTING!!!
Competition Teams include up to five members and five events, smoking and grilling a variety of meats such as ribs, chicken, pork, steak, and Dutch oven items ranging from chili to upside down cake. These items change slightly each year to keep the competition challenging.
Bronco BBQ has a non-competition General Practice group that meets periodically to learn lifelong smoking and grilling skills and work with various other meats. These items change each practice.
