I've never attended a marching contest before. What are the rules?
The main thing you need to know is that marching band contest etiquette requires spectators to remain quiet and seated during performances to respect the musicians and judges. Below are some additional pointers (reminders):
In the Stands
Do not talk or use cell phones: Turn phones to vibrate or off, and hold all conversations between band performances.
Stay in your seat during a performance: Never enter, exit, or walk up and down the aisles while a band is on the field. Wait for the transition break between bands.
Keep children supervised: Do not allow kids to run, play, or stomp up and down the bleachers.
No negative comments: Respect every performing group, remembering that students, staff, and family members from rival schools are sitting right around you.
Supporting the Performers
Applaud for everyone: Cheer and clap to support all participating bands, acknowledging great solos, major drill shifts, and the end of routines.
Be respectful during awards: Never boo during announcements or awards ceremonies, regardless of the results.
Follow recording rules: Video and flash photography are permitted, but please adhere to UIL rules when it comes to posting online.
Can I use noise makers to cheer for my band?
Yes, noise makers are welcome when cheering for your band before and after performances. However, out of respect for all participating groups, please do not use noise makers while a band is performing. We ask that spectators remain quiet during performances so that the musicians can be heard and every band has the opportunity to perform in the best possible environment.
Can I use an umbrella or set up a pop-up tent in the stands?
Yes. Umbrellas and pop-up tents are permitted in the stands. To ensure all spectators can enjoy the performances, we ask that anyone using an umbrella or tent be mindful of those around them and avoid obstructing others' view of the field.
For groups using pop-up tents, please set them up at the top of the stands whenever possible. Individuals using umbrellas should also be considerate of nearby spectators. Event staff may ask you to relocate if your setup is blocking the view of others.
I need to leave and come back. Can I exit and re-enter the stadium without having to purchase another ticket?
Absolutely. Your wristband provides you with exit and re-entry privileges for the entirety of the event, so be sure to keep it on!
