Welcome to 6th grade! Following are the expectations and guidelines that should be followed throughout the 2025-26 school year. We look forward to a very successful year. Please read through this information carefully.
Absences:
Students are expected to complete work in the time prescribed in the student handbook. Students who have been absent should write down the agenda and check the teacher-designated area for make‐up work for any handouts or additional instruction. Students are responsible for making arrangements with the teacher to make up any missed tests and/or daily work. Students must bring a signed and dated note from a parent/guardian within 48 hours of the absence. Those notes should be brought to the attendance office in the main building before or after school or during lunch.
Behavior:
We expect students to come to school ready to learn and allow other students to learn. For that reason, we work to reward great behavior and help students who struggle with behavior to make better choices. Teachers will communicate their expectations about student behavior clearly.
Should unacceptable behavior occur, the following steps will be followed:
verbal warning
one-on-one conversation with the teacher
students calls home
detention
confer with team of teachers
office referral
Books:
6th grade students may read anytime they have the opportunity with permission from their teachers. Students are expected to have a book to read in all classes. This can be a library book or a book from home.
Class Procedures:
1. Go quietly to your seat.
2. Copy the agenda.
3. Begin bell work/warm up immediately.
4. Get materials ready and organized for lesson.
5. Clean desk and surrounding area before leaving classroom.
6. Return any borrowed materials.
7. Remember, the teacher dismisses class, not the bell.
Communication:
We will communicate with parents individually, or as a team, if there is a particular issue. You can check out each of our Calhoun webpages and also contact us by email or phone. If you are concerned about your student in a specific class, please contact the teacher directly. If you are concerned about your student overall, please contact the team leaders, Ms. Kimberly Bock at kbock@dentonisd.org.
Grades:
We use grades to help students and parents understand how well students are mastering material. We urge parents to check their child’s grades weekly on Denton ISD’s Home Access Center (go to http://www.dentonisd.org/Domain/5743 to sign up). If you see low grades, talk to your child about what he/she is doing to better master the concepts. Encourage him/her to attend tutoring sessions or visit the teacher’s website if online tutoring is available. You will receive a progress report in the middle of every nine weeks and a report card just after the nine-week period has ended.

Snacks:
Some teachers may allow students to eat snacks in the classroom. The snack must be nutritious (for example, yogurt, fruit, granola bar, vegetables). No cookies, candy, or anything too sugary please. Students may also bring water to drink, but no other drinks will be acceptable. Eating or drinking in the science classroom is never allowed.
Team Detentions:
If a student earns a detention, the teacher who issued the detention will assign a time. It will either be after school or a lunch detention. After school will be from 3:45 to 4:15 P.M. Parents are responsible for picking up their students promptly at 4:15 P.M.
