3rd Grade science

4th nine weeks -Animal Adaptation

What are we working on in the 4th nine weeks:

  • I can sort organisms based on their structure and function.
  • I can label the classification groups I created.
  • I can explain the classification label and why I put specific animals into that group.

  • Community - (L) all of the living things in an ecosystem
  • Flow of Energy - (L) when energy is transferred from one organism to another in a food chain
  • Function - (L) what something does
  • Habitat - (L) where an organism lives
  • Perish - (L) to die
  • Population - (L) all of the same kind of an organism living in a habitat at the same time
  • Survival - (L) continuing to live
  • Thrive - (L) to live, grow, and/or multiply well

3rd Grade 4th nine weeks Unit of Study - Animal Adaptations

Dear 3rd Grade Families,

Our Focus

In this 3rd grade science unit your child will be learning about how the structures and functions of plants and animals help them survive in certain environments.

Instructional Approach

We will be researching different animals and plants in their natural environments. We will use technology to research as well as our school library. Students will study the structures and traits of organisms to better understand how they thrive in their environments. Students will explore that some characteristics traits of organisms are inherited (such as the number of limbs on an animal or flower color) and recognize that some behaviors are learned in response to living in a certain environment (such as animals using tools to get food).

Family Support

You can help your child in several ways.

  • Talk about your own house pets and how they adapt to your home!
  • You can imagine, with your child, how they might have to adapt to a world without owners!
  • Go online and research unique creatures and have your child record their observations of their traits.
  • Discuss your own (and your child’s own) inherited and learned traits.

Sincerely,

Donna Mullins
