ECO CYCLE CLUB

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are excited to announce a new opportunity for our students the EcoCycle Club! This club will give students a hands-on way to care for our school and our planet.

About the Club
The EcoCycle Club’s mission is to reduce Savannah Elementary’s carbon footprint by finding creative ways to recycle, reuse, and care for our environment. Thanks to funding from the Denton Public School Foundation through the Wally Cooper Grant, we will be:

• Installing and maintaining a rain collection barrel

• Using a small compost tumbler to support a campus wildflower garden

• Assisting with playground clean-up efforts

• Leading other small but meaningful projects that make a big impact on our school environment

Meeting Details

• Day: Wednesdays

• Time: 3:15 – 4:15 p.m.

• Frequency: To be determined

• First Meeting: Date to be announced soon

Student Participation
The club is open to 3rd–5th grade students, with space for about 10 students per grade level. Priority will be given to students who are not already involved in another campus club so that more children have a chance to participate.

Math

Your child is about to begin exploring addition and subtraction of whole numbers with models. To master this skill, they will build on their knowledge of addition and subtraction from second grade. In second grade, your child learned addition and subtraction using concrete and pictorial models and setting up equations with the use of the equals sign.

Reading

BUILDING A READING LIFE: 

Our unit develops a rich life of nonfiction reading along with the skills to do that reading well. It iss crucial for us to prepare our students on how to do that type of reading with strong comprehension. Our focuses are: main idea, text structures, key information, supporting details, and retell.

This week, we are continuing exploring the nonfiction genre. We are continuing to analyze key details to determine the main idea. This week, we are working through a STAAR released passage so they are getting an early glimpse of what to expect with question and answer choice language and learning a few test taking strategies. 

Writing

THE ART OF INFORMATION WRITING:

 Our unit focuses on writing informational text or books on things they are an expert on or know a lot about. We will brainstorm our expert topics. We will choose one to write a nonfiction book that includes all the learning we will do in the upcoming weeks.

This week, we are in the drafting step of the writing process. This week we discussed how authors organize information, and they will be able to choose a structure to organize their information (i.e., chronological order, description, problem/solution, cause/effect, compare/contrast, etc.)

Phonics

No spelling words this week due to the short week. 

Friday we will celebrate students who met the challenge of 50 words correct this 9 weeks!!

Science

In this 3rd grade science unit we will be able to effectively solve problems using the design process, as well as inquire about and understand everyday phenomena related to forces and energy.
