3rd Grade Science

Rapid Changes to the Earth

What are we learning in the 3rd nine weeks:

  • I can investigate rapid changes. (C)
  • I can make observations/claims about rapid changes. (C)
  • I can support those claims with evidence. (P)
  • I can collect and record my observations. (P)
  • I can analyze the observations data I collected. (P)
  • I can communicate the observations using evidence. (P)

  • Earthquake - (E) the sudden movement of the Earth’s crust
  • Landslide - (E) the sudden movement of a mass of rocks, soil, and/or mud down a hill or slope
  • Model - (E) a representation of an object or a system (usually smaller than the original)
  • Rapid Change - (E) when the surface of the earth is altered suddenly and quickly
  • Relationship - (E) the way that two or more objects are connected
  • Volcanic Eruption - (E) when a volcano suddenly breaks open and releases steam and volcanic material
  • Volcano - (E) a mountain with an opening that lets out material from deep inside the earth

3rd Grade 3rd nine weeks Unit of Study - Rapid Changes

Dear 3rd Grade Families,

Our Focus

In this 3rd grade science unit we will learn about cause and effect relationships found in nature. This will includes investigating rapid changes such as: volcanic eruptions, earthquakes, and landslides.

Instructional Approach

We will be researching each rapid change through the internet and our school library. We will make models and collect observations using photographs. This will enhance your child’s understanding of our Earth’s surface and the changes that occur to it because of these rapid events.

Family Support

You can help your child in several ways.

  • Point out different landforms such as mountains, rivers, and valleys.
  • Ask questions about their origination. ( mountains could be formed from earthquakes/ sliding of plates )
  • Ask your child to show you how an earthquake, volcano, or landslide could affect the land around them.
  • Create your own models at home of each of the rapid changes!

Sincerely,

Donna Mullins
