Social Studies

• In 5th grade, our curriculum focuses on American History from Pre-columbian people groups to the events of the early 2000s. Because of the broad scope and limited timeframe, this course will be a survey course, and will not dive into detail on every facet of our nation's history.  We will, however, spend more significant amounts of time with some of the more critical topics in American history, including the British Colonial period, the War for Independence, the nations's founding documents, the structure of National and state governments, and more!

WIN Time 

• During the Social Studies block, we host our targeted intervention period known as What-I-Need (WIN) Time.  During this 45 minute period, the students will meet with tutors, engage in independent practice activities, or whatever else they need to grow in their academic and social skills.  We teachers and tutors use this WIN time to help meet the students' individual needs, and work together to make sure that every single student gets support in their most needed areas.

Library Days

• Every Thursday, for the first 30 minutes of our Social Studies class, we will visit the school library as a class.  While there, we will alternate each week between checking-in/checking-out books and a fun Library Lesson taught by our new school librarian, Ms. Winkler.  I will inform students each week on the days leading up to Thursday whether we will bring our books to check-in, or whether we will have a Library Lesson instead.  By our group trips to the Library, we hope to encourage our students to get excited about reading, and to build their literacy skills with books that align with their interests and skill levels.
