What is the TASFA?

The TASFA (Texas Application for State Financial Aid) is how students apply for state financial aid for higher education. This application must be completed each year a student wants to receive aid towards their education. The application opens on October 1st of each year.


If you cannot say yes to any of the following, you will need to submit the TASFA:

  • U.S. Citizen

  • Permanent U.S. resident with an Alien Registration Card (I-551)

  • Conditional permanent U.S. resident with visa type I-551C

  • Eligible noncitizen with an Arrival/Departure Record (I-94) showing on of the following:

    • Refugee,

    • Asylum granted

    • Parolee (for a minimum of one year), or

    • Cuban-Haitian entrant


Steps to complete your TASFA

  1. Complete the appropriate year application of the TASFA and mail it to the schools you are applying to.

  1. Colleges will receive your TASFA and follow up if any additional documents are needed.
