TEA requires that educators meet these minimum requirements to renew their certificate:

Every 5 years, at least:
150 hours of CPE (continuing professional education) related to the certificate(s) being renewed including:
content area knowledge and skills
professional ethics and standards of conduct
training regarding educating students with disabilities including information particular to educating students with dyslexia.

To support teachers in meeting these minimum state requirements, Comal ISD recommends educators follow this yearly plan.

Comal ISD requires 30 hours of Exchange Day credit earned outside of contract hours which also counts towards CPE credit.
GT Hours (initial 30 hour foundational GT certification or 6 hour update)
All K-12 core content teachers are required to have their initial 30 clock hour foundational GT training. Per TEA, this training addresses the nature and needs, identification and assessment, and differentiated curriculum needs of GT learners.
After receiving the initial 30 clock hours, all teachers mentioned above are required to gain an annual 6-hour update in the area of GT.

Late hires are required to complete Exchange Hours for the dates you were on contract as a certified educator. (If you were hired before one of the staff holidays listed above, you are required to have Exchange Hours for that holiday.)

Hired on or before November 21 - Complete 30+ Exchange Hours.
Hired between December 1, 2025 and January 16, 2026 - Complete 12+ Exchange Hours.
Hired between January 20 and February 13, 2026 - Complete 6+ Exchange Hours.
Hired after February 16th, 2026 - No Exchange Hours required for the current school year.
Professional learning plans may be requested by your Principal and should be submitted for approval prior to the end of the school year for upcoming learning opportunities. Plans should be driven by data and planned with improvement goals in mind. All documentation of completion should be tracked in KickUp. An Out of District Event Request is required for all out of district events.

Any trainings attended outside of Comal ISD, must be pre-approved by your Principal and entered into KickUp using an Out of District Event Request (attendance certificates must be attached).
