Violet is a story of self discovery and learning to accept your differences, while balancing the fact that your circumstances do not define you. This sense of balance was also an important factor within our design. On one hand, much of our production lives within an abstraction of the space as the characters travel throughout the south east. Since the surrounding scenery relies heavily on portraying the more rustic feelings of the memories of Violet's small town, it was very important to both the director and I that our stage properties remained separate from the abstraction. All of the properties and set dressings live within the reality of 1960's southern America. However, these properties also play an important role within the abstraction. In order to emphasize the importance of journey in Violet's life, all of our smaller properties served as set dressing at times. For example, our bus passenger's suitcases can be stacked to create tables or other types of furniture.

While this show takes place nearly 60 years in the past, it remains as a relevant testimony to self discovery.
