This project helped to fund the founding of a co-response program in the Clemson University Police Department that serves the Clemson University community and surrounding areas. Through the program implementation, PPL was able to conduct after-action debriefs following simulated mental health calls for service using virtual reality. These debriefs provide valuable insight for understanding how officers manage the presence of a co-responder during crisis calls for service.

This project tests the effectiveness of artificial intelligence review of police body-worn cameras. A number of software programs now claim to be able to shape officer behavior by using AI models to review large volumes of body-worn camera footage and flag both highly professional and unprofessional behavior. These flags then serve as feedback to the officer to either encourage (highly professional flags) or discourage (unprofessional flags) various behaviors during calls for service. Using a randomized-controlled trial in two police departments, the research team is evaluating the effectiveness of one of these software programs.

This project evaluates the effectiveness of a de-escalation training program implemented in the Virginia Beach Police Department. Using a novel survey test of emotion recognition and systematic social observation via body-worn camera, researchers are testing whether the training results in observable differences in officer behavior outside of use of force incidents.
