Welcome to Mrs. Commander's School Counseling Website!  I am the school counselor for Silver Creek Elementary in the Azle Independent School District.I have the joy of working with students through classroom guidance lessons, small group counseling, and individual counseling.  I also collaborate with school staff and parents in order to best meet the needs of students.

Classroom Guidance Lessons

I visit each classroom multiple times throughout the school year and have the chance to interact with every student during these lessons.  Lessons typically last 30 minutes in length and cover topics such as school readiness skills, understanding feelings of self and others, problem solving skills, friendship skills, and study skills. These topics are determined by needs assessment data and teacher input and meet both state and national standards.

Small Group Counseling

A variety of small groups are offered to students who may benefit from spending some extra time developing academic, social, or emotional skills along with their peers, and to students who are coping with similar life situations.  Groups can have anywhere from 3-12 members and usually meet once a week during lunch for several weeks.

For small group counseling, permission form is sent home that lets parents know what the topic is, what will be covered, and the goals of the group. Parents have the option of allowing their child to participate or declining the invitation to the small group. Topics include social skills, grief, friendship, anger management, anxiety, divorce, etc.

Individual Counseling

Some students can benefit from one-on-one counseling regarding academic, social, or emotional challenges.

To receive individual counseling, a student is referred by their parent, teacher, or principal. Students can also request to see me. Students come to my office to talk

about things that impact their learning at school, such as friendships, bullying, anger, anxiety, self-esteem, etc. In my office, students can feel free to talk about

what worries them and to ask questions. The School Counselor keeps information confidential unless disclosure is required and will inform parents and/or

appropriate authorities when the student’s condition indicates: Harm to Self, Harm to Others, or Harm from Others.

Consultation with parents and teachers is a critical part of the school counselor's role in advocating for students and helping them succeed.

School counselors help locate community resources for parents in search of information or services to help their child at home

I would like to continue being a resource for your child throughout the school year.

My goal is to help your child be successful both academically and socially through

group, individual, or classroom lessons.

If you have any questions or concerns about this, please contact me

I would be happy to work with you to ensure that your child's experience here at school is enjoyable.

Thank you!
