Topic: The Introduction of Research Activities at NSYSU
Date: November 6, AM 9:00~9:35, IR1002(1F)
Abstract:
The presentation is about the introduction of research activities at National Sun Yat–sen University (hereafter the University). It consists of four parts, the first part is the overview of the University, the second one is the highlights of the research performance, the third will show a few honors and awards the University earned in 2017, and the conclusion will be presented finally.
Since the University located in the second largest city, Kaohsiung, in the south of Taiwan. It will play an important role in supporting Taiwan’s New Southbound Policy. Recently, it established a Center for Southeast Asian Studies to serve as a South Think Tank for promoting the political, economic, cultural, and educational relationship among Taiwan and the Southeast Asian Countries
The purpose of the presentation shows the research power of the University, and expects to seek possible opportunities for future academic collaboration with the countries from the Southeast Asia.

Topic: Nanostructured Biosensors
Date: November 7, AM 9:00~9:35, IR1002(1F)
Abstract:
Electrochemical analysis is a promising method for biosensing. In our current work, a highly sensitive nanostructured electro- chemical biosensor based on a 3D sensing element featuring uniformly deposited gold nanoparticles has been developed. The barrier-layer surface of an anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) membrane was adopted as the substrate. A gold thin-film was sputtered onto the substrate, followed by a uniform electrochemical deposition of gold nanoparticles (GNPs) on the gold thin-film. We have been collaborating with Taichung Veterans General Hospital, Academia Sinica, Kaohsiung Medical University, and orchid virus experts for successful detections of the dust mite antigen Der p2, allergy patient’s serum, allergy disease related gene mutations (SNP and Haplotype), dengue and Japanese encephalitis virus-receptor binding, hepatitis B virus DNA, Alzheimer's (AD) Aβ protein, and orchid virus using our nanostructured biosensors.
In addition to the above nanostructured electrochemical biosensor, we have collaborated with Phonics International Semiconductor Inc. to develop a cost effective and high sensitive non-enzymatic glucose biosensor using a simple MEMS method. Measurements showed a 10.2-fold enhancement of the sensing area in comparison with a plain gold electrode. Actual detection of glucose demonstrated that the proposed non-enzymatic glucose biosensor can operate in a linear range of 55.6 mM-13.89 mM. It had a sensitivity of 749.2 μA·mM−1·cm−2 and a detection limit of 9 mM. When the glucose concentration is less than 100 mg/dL, the accuracy of the developed glucose biosensor reaches ±0.18 mg/dL, which is much better than the FDS and ISO 15197 standard of ±20 mg/dL and ±15 mg/dL, respectively.

Topic: Multifunctional Nanocarriers for Efficient Treatment against Hepatocellular Carcinoma with Desmoplasia
Date: November 7, AM 10:40~11:15, IR1002(1F)
Abstract:
Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is characterized as a malignant disease that progresses rapidly, and it is refractory to conventional chemotherapy, as well as molecular targeted therapy. Both intrinsic and acquired resistance to the targeted mono-therapy and unwanted toxicity often develop and restrict the therapeutic efficacy and clinical application of the treatment. In addition, most cases of HCC develop in the presence of liver cirrhosis and chronic inflammation, which fuels HCC growth and influences treatment prognosis. Our aim is to develop targeted nanoparticle (NP) formulation to co-deliver multiple therapeutic agents such as plasmid DNA (pDNA), siRNA or small molecule drugs into both HCC and the surrounding fibrotic liver. The therapeutic agents co-delivered by NPs could target the compensatory activated pathway in the tumor cells and stromal cells in the microenvironment and thus efficiently induce apoptosis in the tumor lesions. We demonstrated that the targeted multifunctional NPs could ameliorate angiogenesis, fibrosis and inflammation in the tumor microenvironment and suppress HCC progression in a clinically relevant HCC model with associated underlying liver fibrosis. To this end, the targeted multifunctional NPs can provide an effective approach for overcoming drug resistance, leading to better therapeutic effects in treating liver cancer.
