Research

Research in the Liang group is involved in a variety of exploratory syntheses and their catalytic applications in organic and polymer chemistry.

I. Mismatched donor-acceptor chemistry

Metal complexes containing a hybrid chelating ligand such as PNP, PNN, NP are composed of mismatched donor-acceptor pairs. These compounds are inherently stable but reactive. See more details.

II. Organic synthesis

Olefin metathesis (Nobel Prize 2005) and cross-coupling (Nobel Prize 2010) catalysis have revolutionized organic synthesis. Several name reactions such as Heck, Suzuki, Sonogashira, and Kumada couplings have been studied with catalytic group 10 complexes. Catalytic hydrogenation of unsaturated molecules is achieved under ambient conditions. See more details.

III. Polymer chemistry

Polymers are materials that we use in our ordinary lives. Petroleum- and bio-based polymers and copolymers are possibly made in a controlled manner. See more details.
