Virginia Woolf & Typography Art

Virginia Woolf (January 25, 1882 – March 28, 1941) was a British writer born and raised in London, England. She was one of the most famous writers of the modernist era and wrote many best-selling books such as 'Mrs. Dalloway', 'A Room of One's Own' and 'To The Lighthouse'.

Especially, one of her work 'A Room of One's Own' is well known for its contents that tackle many feminist issues such as women’s lack of access to education as well as their economic and social dependence on men.

Why I chose her work?

It was the day when I was watching and reading movie and literature version of 'Frankenstein'. At that time, since I was focusing on the main story more, I notice the author's name in last after reading. And I remember myself that I was quite surprised that the 'Frankenstein' that I just read was women's work, for its literal style was(to me) felt to be rather 'masculine'. After this moment, I realized how prejudiced I was (even that I am literature majored student) toward women writers and that becomes the present reason why I am taking 'Women in Literature' class and chose her writing. To contemplate more in connection between women beings and literature, and to try to debate them.

typography is the visual art of creating written words. Before the digital age, typography was a rather specialized craft that was confined to the worlds of book and magazine design and a range of advertising and public works. Road signs, billboards and product packaging are some examples.

But in these days, typography is wising its way, not just lingering in delivering certain information, but for pure art, that contains many various of meanings.
