USDA Meal waiver extended for school year
8.23.21
Fort Zumwalt Student Nutrition Services was recently notified by the USDA that its waiver of fees for regular meals will continue for the 2021-2022 school year. This means regular breakfasts and regular lunches at any of our schools will be free of charge to all students for the remainder of the school year. A la carte items at any school and coffee shop items at our high schools do not qualify.
WHAT? Free school meals for Fort Zumwalt students The federal government has extended meal service through the Seamless Summer Option for Fort Zumwalt students, meaning there will be no charges for breakfast or lunch at Fort Zumwalt schools. Virtual students are included in this program.
PLEASE NOTE: This is only for a full breakfast and/or lunch, which must include a fruit or vegetable with the meal. All a la carte items at middle and high schools such as extra entrees, chips, drinks or snacks and purchases at high school coffee shops will be charged accordingly.
WHO? In addition, Fort Zumwalt residents 18 years old and younger who do not already receive meals through Fort Zumwalt can also sign up. In addition to Fort Zumwalt students, those in the community 18 years old and younger who do not currently receive meals from Fort Zumwalt can also sign up each week to pick up meal packs. Here’s how it works:
Go to the USDA Community Meal Program page, where you will find the sign-up form you will need to complete each week in order to receive meals.
HOW? Extended federal program The Fort Zumwalt School District Student Nutrition Services department applied for and received a federal waiver extending the Seamless Summer Option program based on community eligibility. This federal waiver was approved based on specific criteria set forth by the USDA. These criteria include, but are not limited to, the impact of COVID-19 on our community (ie., the number of positive cases since the first day of school), the St. Charles County unemployment rate and other economic conditions in the region.
Student Nutrition Services continues to monitor the availability of programs that would be of assistance to Fort Zumwalt families.
Can I opt out of the program? Yes. If you would like to continue paying for your child(ren)’s meals and extend the life of the available federal resources, please contact your school cashier by phone or email.
