Here at DuBray Middle School, we have a rich tradition of choral excellence that has been established. We strive for excellence and bettering oneself through the vehicle of MUSIC! High standards are set for what is expected in our choir program. Choir is a wonderful opportunity for students – they are part of a group working together toward a unified goal, they have a unique means for expressing thoughts and emotions, and they bring joy to themselves and others through song. Your support and your student’s hard work, discipline, and dedication will make this a fun and rewarding year for all involved!
Throughout the year, we will work together to develop their vocal technique, become better music readers, and gain a broader understanding of their voices. We will also focus on learning ensemble participation skills such as self-confidence, trust, and building group cohesiveness and helping each student find his or her own voice within the context of a choral program.
Currently, our program includes 6th grade choir, which is part of an exploration wheel. This is a beginning ensemble where students are taught fundamentals of music and learn how to practically use these skills in the setting of a choir. Students do not need any prior singing experience to be a part of this choir. Students will learn how to use their instrument (voice) correctly through sound vocal pedagogical techniques, which include, but are not limited to posture, breathing, tone, and resonance. The literature will consist mainly of 2 part music. Folk songs, partner songs, rounds, canons will be a strong portion of the curriculum. Students will also learn about historical relevance of literature that is being studied.
We have a 7th Grade Chorus that is an intermediate choir, which teaches students how to further expand the fundamentals of music and singing. The literature will include 2 part and 3 part music. 7th Grade Chorus will provide opportunities for students to further explore and develop their voice.
Our last choir is our 8th Grade Chorus, which is the Advanced Choir. These students are not only singing in concerts, but are involved in other activities such as; contests, festivals, and performing at community functions. These students will again be furthering the development of their voices, through the use of 3 part literature.
