"Maths is a challenging yet enjoyable subject. We are buliding on what we did at GCSE and going way beyond. We are given textbooks in Year 12 which are really useful as they have lots of examples, questions and answers. We have regular intervention after school which focuses on exam questions"
"Maths is a very satisfying and enjoyable subject. It enables you to look at the bigger picture of a problem and improve your problem solving and analytical skills which are very well looked upon at University and future jobs / apprenticeships". Nicole Jastrzebska Yr13
"Maths is a great subject as it enables you to solve problems, encouraging you to become a more determined person. It also helps you to think critically in situations, enabling you to work through challenges and finding alternative methods of accomplishing tasks". Bella Cleveland (6th Form Alumni) University of East Anglia
Students studying A Level Maths will be entered in for the Senior Maths Challenge which gives students the opportunity to test their problem solving skills.
The Maths Department have links to Trinity College, Cambridge and they support us organising trips to Cambridge. This year we are looking to go to the Maths Inspiration Lectures in Cambridge.
There are three overarching themes underpinning the subject content:
Mathematical argument, language and proof
Mathematical problem solving
Mathematical modelling
There is also a requirement for students to use calculators throughout the course. We recommend students purchasing the Casio FX - 991CW.
At the end of the two year course, students will sit 3 exams. Each exam is worth one third of the marks. The first two papers, Pure Mathematics 1 and Pure Mathematics 2 focus on the Pure content such as calculus, trigonometry and logarithms. Paper 3, Statistics and Mechanics, focuses on the Applied content present in the specification such as hypothesis testing and projectiles.
How many lessons of A Level Maths do we have?
Students will have 7 lessons of Maths spread across the two week timetable. We also expect students in Year 12 to do a bi-weekly after school intervention and year 13s to do weekly sessions.
Who teaches A Level Maths?
Currently Mr. Daly, Mrs. Doyle and Mr. Finegan teach A Level Maths. Hopefully next year, we will have one more teacher joining the A Level Team. Students will have two teachers, with one teacher teaching Pure and Mechanics, and the other teaching Pure and Statistics.
Should I choose A Level Maths?
If you love Maths and you are confident you can attain the entry requirements, then choosing A Level Maths is a no-brainer. You will be really well supported by committed and experienced teachers , provided with resources such as textbooks and provided with the opportunity to gain a much revered qualification. It is a fantastic course to be on!
