Intermediate and Middle School Technology Coordinator
The moment that we walked into the room to talk to Mr. Seth Bacon we could feel an immediate glow of kindness in him. He is a tech teacher for the Lower and Intermediate schools at Parker. He spends most of his time in the LS/IS computer lab by the 4th grade classrooms and auditorium on the main floor. We went downstairs to the computer lab to interview him about some of the aspects of his daily life as a teacher at Parker, and we learned some very interesting facts that we did not know about him and his job before our interview with him.
There are many different aspects to Mr. Bacon's job, but one of the most important parts of his work is doing small things and other behind the scenes jobs. He is involved in many jobs for the school, including hosting a Minecraft-based after-school “club” in the Parker P.L.U.S program for grades 3-5. He is in charge of the computers for Lower and Intermediate School during official school hours (8:10-3:10). He also helps suggest what technology the school should provide and purchase, and in what ways we should use it. In the interview, he specifically said that “we should use the technology in a better way,” because of how the iPads students are given in 6th grade become obsolete as soon as they begin Upper School, as they use their own laptops. Mr. Bacon has an interesting job and has contributed a massive amount to the community.
Mr. Bacon never knew that he would become a LS/IS tech teacher. His love for technology began in 5th grade, when he got an early Apple computer. Mr. Bacon said he “fell in love at first sight” with the computer, and that was when his interest in computers began. Though he never foresaw his job as a tech teacher at the time, he did know he wanted to do something that had to do with teaching, just like his mother, Alison Abbott, who taught at Parker for 36 years, including SK, 1st Grade and 2nd Grade.
As of today, Mr. Bacon has a Windows PC as his personal computer at home, because he thinks Apple computers are too expensive. He also believes that a Windows PC is better for gaming, which he does in his free time. Here at Parker, the school computers are all Macs, which Mr. Bacon supports, because he says that Mac computers are easier to use for students. Macs are actually better for creating digital art, such as filmmaking and music creation. Microsoft Windows is better for creating and playing video games.
When we talked to Mr. Bacon he told us many interesting things about his job. We learned he doesn’t get to make the decisions for most things, but he does make suggestions. For instance, Mr. Bacon can make suggestions about what technology the school buys for the next year. We also learned that the reason why we switched desktops to laptops is that laptops are more mobile and they can go from classroom to classroom.
Mr. Bacon was not always a lower school tech teacher. He once worked with Parker P.M., which is a program for kids in Lower and Intermediate School who stay late after school. Mr. Bacon told us that if he could change one thing about his job it would be to spend more time with the little kids because he only gets to see them 1-2 times a week, whereas he sees the older kids more times. We noticed that Mr. Bacon’s job combines several things he really enjoys: working, teaching tech and being with children.
During our interview, all of us noticed how Mr. Bacon always asked us about our own personal opinion or what we thought. We could tell that Mr. Bacon enjoyed being around young people, and he even said that his favorite part of his job was watching the students he taught grow up over the years. Mr. Bacon's kind nature is definitely our favorite part about him. We thank him for taking the time to interview with us and are so grateful for all he does for the school.
