First Grade Superheroes

Our superhero origin stories

(AKA: how we became superheroes)

Learning All About Superheroes!

Over the past several weeks first graders explored superheroes. Students read lots of books about the most famous superheroes from Wonder Woman to Spiderman to Black Panther. We read books together and in small groups and collected information about each superhero's power and how they use that power to help their community.

Next, students did a silent sort. In a silent sort, participants silently group ideas together that fit in the same category, there are no right or wrong answers, it is just a way for people to share connections and start to see themes in the data. After the silent sort we worked as a group to identify themes of each sorted group, this helped us come up with a list of how superheroes use their powers to help their community. Some of the themes first graders came up with included: Standing up for everyone to feel accepted and for a peaceful community, sets good examples for others and treat others how they would want to be treated, and protect the environment, people, animals, and the galaxy.

Then, first graders thought about Parker and how a superhero could help take care of our community. We brainstormed ideas. The list included: playing with others when they are sad or need a friend, being a good listener, welcoming new students to Parker, taking care of the plants and animals that live on the campus, and standing up for people and their feelings.

Discovering Our Superhero Identities!

After first graders studied and learned about superheroes and how they use their powers to help the community, we set out to discover our own superhero identities! Use the brainstorming list of how a superhero could help at Parker, first graders created superhero profiles thinking about how they would help the Parker community if they were a superhero. They decided what their superpower is, how they would use that power to help Parker, and their superhero name. The last step was designing their superhero logo! Students sketched out their ideas and then used Cricut design software to create their logo. Then using the library's Cricut Cutter, we cut out their logos on iron-on material and created each first grader superhero's cape!
