The staff at Irwin understands the importance of all stakeholders working together in order to build a culture of learning that encourages students to flourish. It is imperative that the physical space is designed to foster a learning environment that promotes critical thinking, student discourse, and collaboration. The student furniture at Irwin allows for flexible seating and grouping based on the needs of the lesson. The variety of materials and supplies are plentiful to support instruction and learning for all students.
Irwin school partners closely with parents by inviting them into the learning community for STEM events. To extend the classroom opportunities, parents are able to experience STEM activities with their children during STEM Family Nights. It is important to the teachers at Irwin that parents experience and share in the learning first hand in order for them to see what makes their school so special.
The administrator at Irwin created a schedule that provides teachers multiple opportunities to collaborate each day with their colleagues in order to provide students with rich learning experiences. Teachers utilize a cross-curricular approach to incorporate multiple subject areas into the planning process. The administrative team members are active participants in supporting teachers in the planning process.
Irwin's STEM leadership team meets monthly to provide input into the STEM planning process. A representative from every grade level, PLTW teacher, instructional coach, and administrator serves on the team. During our monthly meetings, we discuss our STEM vision and mission, interdisciplinary units, and program improvement. Grade level representatives take this information back to their teams during Common Planning.

Throughout the year Irwin teachers collaborate with grade-level partners, related arts teachers, and the instructional coach to create interdisciplinary units. Student survey data is collected from students regarding their attitudes and interests concerning STEM, technology, computer science, and career pathways. We use this data to inform our STEM plan as well as our interdisciplinary units.
A STEM parent survey was given to parents at the beginning of the year. Parent feedback showed overall favorable support of what we are doing and believe that STEM is an important part of their child's education. Parent input has and will greatly assist in progressing our STEM program this year and years ahead. The survey will also be sent to families at the end of the school year. Data gathered from both surveys will directly impact STEM education at Irwin.

The foundation of Irwin Professional Learning is to provide a variety of methods, resources, and tools to support STEM instruction. Through the methods outlined below, 100% of Irwin teachers receive job-embedded instructional support related to STEM instruction.

Lesson Study- Teachers collaborate to design lessons and utilize the district’s continuous cycle of improvement model.
Coaching-Irwin’s instructional coach partners with grade-level teams weekly to assist teachers with STEM instruction.
Modeling- The STEM Resource Teacher and Discovery Education Consultant provide ongoing modeling for classroom teachers
Mentoring- Grade-level partners, resource teachers, and related arts instructors serve as mentors for new teachers to adapt to the STEM culture.
Additionally, over a three-year period, Irwin teachers participated in over 90 hours of professional learning with Discovery Education. Below you can find an outline of the modules and training in detail.
A variety of communication methods are utilized to connect with families and community stakeholders. An interactive newsletter communicates STEM learning opportunities with families every week. Families are also connected through bi-monthly Facebook posts. In addition to written communication, videos are also created to highlight and share STEM integration. Classroom teachers utilize Class Dojo and Seesaw throughout the week to communicate STEM learning to families.
100% of Irwin students experience PLTW modules in the STEM Lab every week. They all experience the Innovation Lab where students work on projects based on student inquiry. Students are not pulled for special programming during these lab experiences.
