A Senior Capstone Research Project by Eden Turner
How can the home be designed to create a comfortable, functional, and inviting space that accommodates both guests and the family’s older children while meeting their evolving needs?
This project centers on a family of five who recently designed and built a luxurious, modern home that includes a separate guest house. The family has three children: their eldest daughter, age 30, is recently married and planning to start a family of her own; the other two children, twins, are currently juniors in college and each have bedrooms within the main house. The design must thoughtfully address the needs of adult children and visiting guests, ensuring both privacy and comfort while maintaining a cohesive, high-end aesthetic throughout the property.
Backround Info
I began by sketching my ideas on where I want to put furniture on what is called flimsly paper. The paper goes over the floorplan and is transparent.
I reached out to my uncle, Kenneth Turner, an art dealer, and asked him to share selections of modern artwork that would complement the space.
I went to the office of Julie Hayes to find samples of fabrics/upholstery/rugs for each room and gather more of an idea on how I want the interiors to look like.
Materials
I used a variety of pens and red pencils, each with different tip sizes to achieve varied line weights. The red pencils are especially effective in highlighting the furniture, allowing it to stand out within the composition.
I used tracing paper to outline the layout, filling in the walls and carefully sketching the furniture to define the space.
