A contractor is coming out this Friday to do some estimates on gates to further enclose our campus. We will be closing all entrances, except for the Fortner parking lot and the entrance from the Pontiac lot as we need to have entry points for office visitors. We will also be installing new signage at every entry point that lists the Ed.Code information for no trespassing. Thank you to all parents who helped put these new safety measures in place.
I will be notifying parents anytime we have a stranger danger alert on campus. A few weeks ago we had a middle school student ride their bike down from the baseball fields and he talked to students. We notice this and as soon as staff approached the student, they took off on their bike. When strangers have come on campus, it is rare for staff to be able to identify or talk with them as they usually leave as soon as we try to approach them. Please report anyone you see on our campus that is a cause for concern.
We have recently had an influx of mosquitoes on campus. This is what has been done regarding this:
The District has filled dirt in the holes that had standing water in them and checked the watering schedule so there shouldn't be over watering.
Contacted the Alameda County Mosquito Abatement District.
They found at least 3 different types of mosquitoes that could be the problem in this area.
Found the Salt Marsh Mosquitoes that are coming from the bay.
These mosquitos breed in the tidal salt marshes and can travel more than 20 miles. They are currently found at the nearby cemetery because there are a lot of damp, shady areas and standing water.
During the heavy rains from last winter, two of the access roads to the salt marshes were damaged and no longer accessible to be able to treat this mosquito breeding ground. Since it is also a sanctuary they must treat by hand. They are working on how to treat the area.
Found two different mosquitoes in the Warm Springs park area.
These mosquitoes are local and breed in standing water. Standing water was found in some of the drains at the Warm Springs park so they treated it. These populations should be dwindling due to the treatment.
Mosquito repellent can be put on before coming to school, however, it cannot be brought to school. This should die down as the weather continues to change. We are not allowed to spray the campus due to the toxic nature of doing this.
There have been some concerns regarding not having a dedicated science prep teacher. I addressed this last year with parents and will review the reason for this here. This is tied to enrollment and the CBA (FUDTA teacher's contract). To hire a new science prep teacher we need these items to happen first:
Enrollment would need to grow, as this determines our prep teacher allocation.
Teachers vote for the prep selection, anytime there is an increase. They would need to vote for science as outlined in the CBA, which we cannot deviate from.
If we did have a science prep teacher, they would be teaching the exact same content the teachers are currenlty teaching as this is the way Amplify is designed. Our studnets are not missing any of the science content that other schools, who have a science prep teacher, are receiving. Please note that some schools have never had a science prep teacher and some schools have more than one. Again, this is driven by enrollment and what the teachers vote for. Our staff will be revisiting our pacing guides to cover the essential science standards for this school year and will be covering as much of this content as possible as we must also balance and cover all other subject areas, with the same rigor and attention. The only subject that has California State required minutes attached to it, is PE. I will post an update on this, once this is complete, by the end of October.
Please see the flyer below for our Walk and Roll to School Day which will be Wednesday, October 4.
August 11, 2023
Hello Warm Springs families,
Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year! The first day of school is Wednesday, August 16. All of us at Warm Springs look forward to welcoming our new 3rd graders as well as our returning students. Throughout the year, we will be serving the needs of our students by providing challenging academic instruction, intervention, enrichment, social-emotional learning opportunities, and character education. We eagerly await the days that will soon be filled with learning, joyful moments of play, friendships, and good health. Our school theme for this year will be, HAPPINESS. Please find ways to practice a heart full of gratitude, which creates Happiness, through out this school year. We will be reminding students of this throughout the year.
This site will be provided from time to time so that I can communicate more frequently with you, as needed, instead of waiting to put it in our monthly newsletter. Our first newsletter with go out in September.
Please welcome our new staff secretary, Mrs. LeAnne Kodama. Mrs. Kodama comes to us with many years of experience and has been an excellent addition to our Wolf Pack! We are so thankful for her.
In partnership,
Scott Iwata
Principal
