Good afternoon, Parents!

Thank you so much for the outpouring of generosity for Teacher Appreciation Week. I am grateful. The growth in each child since August is miraculous. I am happy to be their teacher :D

This afternoon, Room 16's scientists explored light and shadow. Tomorrow we will do the same. However, the same activity will be conducted mid-morning. Goals include to compare the time of day when the activity was implemented, to reflect on the benefits and challenges, and to better understand how light is impacted due to our orbitting around the sun which results in a shadow.

It's fun to see how these scientists enjoy their shadow that follows them around. These researchers are also shadow puppetting on the concrete and the outdoor wall of the classroom. Getting reacquainted with my shadow has been a treat, too :D

Remember to smile! Life is beautiful!

Blessings,

Ms. Uyehara, M.Ed. :D

Good afternoon, Parents!

Last week, the iReady Diagnostic Results for Reading and Math were distributed. Overall, students' outcomes were amazing! Increases spanned from a few points to 97 points!

The Math diagnostic tended be different in format. In comparison with the Math Expressions curriculum more reading was required. Nonetheless, the students rocked it! Increases in proficiency of Math skills abounded :D

Last week, the second round of narrative went home. The topic was Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The students demonstrated their understanding through class discussions, book read alouds, and YouTube documentaries. The goal was to have cited three or more or facts about Dr. King.

This week, the third round of narrative will be sent home in the Thursday folder. Students wrote from the perspective of a scientist studying plant and animal defenses. Again, students were required to cite three or more facts from our discussions, book read alouds, and YouTube.

Next week, we have two main objectives:

1.) to explore the writing genre of stating an opinion.

2.) to build upon their academic vocabulary in Amplify Science.

Be on the look out for a vocabulary list tomorrow. Students will memorize the definitions. Ideally, students will want to spell the vocabulary words as accurately as possible :D

There will be a vocabulary quiz next Friday, February 2, 2024 :D

Blessings,

Ms. Uyehara, M.Ed. :D

Hello Parents!

Happy Monday! Can you believe it? We have completed the first half of the first trimester! Wow! Did time fly! I hope you have seen the growth your child has experienced both literally and figuratively since this past August 16th! :D

Today we launched Writer's Notebook. This will be done in class. 15 minutes three to four times during the week will be dedicated to your child applying their reading and writing skills. Spelling correctly will not be the focus. Rather, the joy of writing is the goal. Additional goals include to reflect on their day, to restate the question in the topic sentence, and to write three to five supporting sentences with a conclusion statement. Yes, the students launched into writing a paragraph! And they are succeeding! :D

Progress Reports will be sent home this week. Please look for them in the Thursday folder. Students who are receiving a score of 2 [partially meeting standards] or 1 [needs improvement] in Spelling, Math, and/or Writing will receive a progress report. In the second half of this trimester, Social Studies and Science will be instroduced.

If there is a Patterson library book at home, please have your child return it to school as soon as they are done reading it. Checking out books will not be allowed otherwise :D Thank you

Happy Thursday, Parents and Students!

In your child's Thursday folder. You will see the following: last week's Spelling Quiz, Math Unit 1 Quiz, and iReady Reading Diagnostic Assessment Results.

Last week's Spelling Quiz went overvall very well. Everyone received a score of 3 for their first Spelling Quiz of the year. Next Friday's quiz and those thereafter will reflect scores in alignment with the district report card.

For some of us, the Math Unit 1 Quiz was not distributed. The result was a score of 2 or 1. I will conduct Math Workshop to review those concepts. Your child will then retake the quiz for an opportunity to score higher. The higher score will be recorded.

The iReady Reading Diagnostic Results are in! This is a wonderful tool to set goals for your child. We will retest twice this year. The goal is to see progress towards the next school year. There is information included such as the reading lexile score and the current outcome of your child's reading level.

Enjoy a blessed day :D
