Hello Mission San Jose Elementary Families,
March brings a sense of energy and momentum to our MSJE school community. As we enter into the last trimester, our students continue to grow academically, socially, and emotionally through engaging lessons, collaborative projects, and meaningful classroom discussions. This month offers wonderful opportunities to celebrate reading, creativity, and problem-solving, while also reinforcing the routines and habits that help every child thrive. I am continually inspired by the dedication of our teachers and staff and the enthusiasm our students bring to learning each day.
March is also a time to reflect on progress and set goals for the months ahead. As we approach spring assessments, we remain focused on supporting each student’s individual growth and ensuring a strong finish to the school year. Thank you for your ongoing partnership, encouragement, and involvement in our school community. Together, we create a nurturing and challenging environment where every child can succeed.
In Partnership,
Katy Carter, Principal

On February 12, the CDE provided this press release with this remark from State Superintendent Tony Thurmond:
"Our California Green Ribbon Schools reflect the very best of what is possible when innovation, equity, and environmental stewardship come together. I congratulate this year’s honorees for their leadership in creating healthy, sustainable learning environments—particularly in communities that have been historically underserved—and for empowering students with the knowledge and skills to address climate resiliency and critical local challenges. Your commitment ensures that California’s students are prepared to be thoughtful, creative, and responsible stewards of our shared future.”
I am thrilled to congratulate MSJE as a 2026 Silver-level Green Ribbon School Honoree. Way to go, Mustangs!

Every Year, California students take several statewide tests. When combined with other measures such as grades, classwork, and teacher observations, these tests give families and teachers a more complete picture of their child’s learning. Families can use the results to identify where your child is doing well and where they might need more support.
Initial & Summative ELPAC: Students who have a home language survey that lists a language other than English will take the initial test, which identifies students as a Multilingual Learner student or as initially fluent in English. Students who are classified as Multilingual Learner students will take the Summative ELPAC every year until they are reclassified as proficient in English.
What is the test format? Both the Initial and Summative ELPAC are computer-based.
Which standards are tested? The 2012 California English Language Development Standards.
Alternate ELPAC: Students whose IEP identifies the use of an alternate assessment and who have a home language survey that lists a language other than English will take the Alternate Initial ELPAC, which identifies students as an English learner student or as initially fluent in English. Students who are classified as Multilingual Learner students will take the Alternate Summative ELPAC every year until they are reclassified as proficient in English.
What is the test format? Both the Alternate Initial and Alternate Summative ELPAC are computer-based.
Which standards are tested? Alternate achievement standards derived from the 2012 California English Language Development Standards.

The Fremont Unified School District is excited to provide ongoing opportunities for students to learn and engage with peers and staff! As we head toward the holiday season, we want to make sure you know that continuing the habit of daily attendance is more important than ever; please make all attempts to restrict family travel to non-school days.
Good attendance helps to:
● Build routines that help reduce stress
● Make new friends or reconnect with their friends and teachers
● Engage in learning
● Gain access to meals, health care, or fun activities
Every absence is a missed day of learning. Let’s work together to make daily attendance a top priority. Too many absences, excused or unexcused, can keep students from succeeding in school and in life.
How many are too many? 10% of the school year, that’s 18 missed days or 2 days a month, can knock students off track. Remember that good attendance benefits your child’s education. Students who miss a day of school not only miss instruction but must make up work and catch up with the new material at the same time.
For more information regarding the importance of regular school attendance, please see the English | Spanish | Chinese attendance flyers.

The purpose of MSJE’s Lost & Found Policy is to reduce the quantity of personal items students lose at school and to responsibly repurpose unclaimed items to maintain a clean and healthy school environment.
Students are encouraged to look for any lost items in the MUR at lunch time. During the 1st week of every month, all lost & found items will be brought out to the bike lock/Kindergarten area for families to search for missing items. After each monthly “claiming week,” remaining items will be properly disposed of. Items of greater value (ex. jewelry, money, glasses) may be kept at the office. Writing your child’s name on the inside of jackets and on water bottles, lunch boxes, and containers is strongly recommended and will help us return belongings to students.
The next School Site Council meeting is on Wednesday, March 11 at 3:00 PM.
The 2025-2026 MSJE School Site Council currently has two open positions. We are still in need of an alternate member. If you are interested in serving on the SSC as an alternate, please contact Principal Carter.
The Commitment: Elected members would serve a 2-year term and attend SSC meetings 5 times per year (2nd Wednesdays of September, October, November, March, and April, 3:00 to 4:00 PM). Parent/community members work with school staff to edit and approve the Comprehensive School Safety Plan (CSSP) and the School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) for the continued growth of student success in order to close the achievement gap and enhance and enrich the school experience for all students.
Questions: Please address any questions to the principal, Katy Carter (kcarter@fusdk12.net).
Attention parents/guardians of Multilingual Learners: Attending MSJE's English Language Advisory Committee (ELAC) meetings in a great way to learn about MSJE's English Language Development instructional program. During these meeting, parents/guardians will be able to provide meaningful input on programs and services that support our English learners and on the development of the School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA).
2025-2026 MSJE ELAC meeting dates are September 15, November 3, December 15, March 2, April 13, and May 11. All meetings start at 6:00 PM (join on Zoom).

Hello Families,
March begins to give us a little bit of warmer weather. The start of Spring reminds us that change is upon us and we need to be flexible. This month brings special celebrations like Read Across America from March 2-6. This national initiative which is centered around Dr. Seuss’s birthday encourages children to read and foster a love for reading through diverse, inclusive books.
New lunch bunch groups and small counseling groups will start this month. Groups occur during lunch recess once a week for 6 weeks. Small counseling groups will focus on friendship and stress management. Students, parents, and teachers can refer students based on their need for support.
YFS will be offering a 5-week Tools for Change in person parenting classes for parents of adolescents from 12-18 years old. The flyers are linked below:
Tools for Change Spanish classes, Tuesdays, 3/24/26 – 4/21/26, 10 am – 1 pm.
Tools for Change English classes, Thursdays, 3/26/26 – 4/23/26, 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm
This month, students will begin Unit 4 from the Second Step Curriculum focused on “Problem-Solving.” At home, we encourage families to engage in conversation which reinforce their student’s learning and support additional practice beyond the classroom. The following resources provide an overview of the ideas and concepts your student will be learning: Kindergarten, First Grade, Second Grade, Third Grade, Fourth Grade, and Fifth Grade.
Best Regards,
Ms. Vue, School Counselor
