Dear MSJE community,

Current trends that make up 21st Century Learning

21st Century Learning Skills are necessary for students to master in order for them to experience school and life success in an increasingly digital and connected age. It includes digital literacy, traditional literacy, content knowledge, media literacy, and learning/innovation skills. Traditional teaching, along with access to the Internet for study and research skills have become an integral part of the education process of today. Educators at MSJE are “committed to connecting students with their unique futures”. They offer an unparalleled education that inspires children to be creative problem-solvers, innovators, and leaders. Please see the tab "Computational Thinking" (above, next to "Home") for more details on how we are adapting to a 21st century vision of students who are not just computer users but also computationally literate creators; and students who will be proficient in the concepts and practices of computer science.

Qualities and skills a child growing up in 21st century world would need

For a child this would mean traditional content-learning skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening comprehension in content areas such as Mathematics, English language, Science, History and Geography. It would also mean engaging in STEAM to meet the needs of a 21stcentury economy. STEAM is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue and critical thinking. The end results are students who take thoughtful risks, engage in experiential learning, persist in problem-solving, embrace collaboration, and work through the creative process. These are the innovators, educators, and learners of the 21st century.

How would I support the development of these skills in my students?

As an educator, with a background in Education, Liberal Arts, Multimedia, and teaching Computer Science for K-9 students, I would support the development of these 21st century learning skills in my computer lab by fostering a safe, fun, and meaningful learning environment. Besides collaborating with teachers and parents, I would be tuned in to the needs of my students. I'd like to foster strong inter-personal skills as well as critical-thinking skills in order to be successful in an increasingly fluid, interconnected, and complex world.

Technology allows for 24/7 access to information, constant social interaction, and easily created and shared digital content. In this setting, educators can leverage technology to create an engaging and personalized environment to meet the emerging educational needs of this generation. No longer does learning have to be one-size-fits-all or confined to the classroom. The opportunities afforded by technology should be used to re-imagine 21st-century education, focusing on preparing students to be learners for life.

As a California Credentialed teacher, I take great pride in being an integral part of shaping young minds and tomorrow’s responsible and successful citizens. I look forward to 2021/2022 academic year as one that has brought me to the MSJE Community. I look forward to meeting all the children, their parents and teachers, in person.

Let's have a great year together!

Best Regards,

Vaidehi Madabushi
