COURSE OVERVIEW: Horner Middle School physical education is based on the premise that physical activity and participation are important for all students, regardless of their level of athletic skill or ability. Students will learn how to incorporate physical activity into their daily lives. We also hope to instill enjoyment of physical activity, as well as understanding how to maintain physical fitness.
CURRICULUM: Units are two weeks in duration. Here is a sample of possible activities: land polo, soccer, jump rope, basketball, volleyball, badminton, flag
football, paddle tennis, track and field, ultimate frisbee, disc golf, lacrosse, bowling, team handball, weight training, softball, bocce, scooters, fitness, running, crab soccer, blooper ball, baggo, hockey, omnikin games, aerobics, line dancing.
EXPECTATIONS: Respect the rights and property of others and yourself. Follow directions. Be prepared for class. Make good decisions while following school wide rules. No cell phones visible or out in the locker room. Do not bring phones to class.
GRADES: Based on participation, endurance runs, skill/written/fitness tests. Students run the pacers or mile every 10 days. Physical Fitness assessment occurs 1-2 times per month. If homework is given, no late work is accepted.
PARTICIPATION: Daily participation is required. A note from home will excuse a student for 3 days and a doctor note must be provided on the fourth day. Students will dress out for class and the teacher will modify activity. Female students are not excused during menstruation. Students dress and participate but do not run during fasting. (Please provide a note)
ABSENCES: It is your responsibility to check with the teacher, make an appointment and make up missed assignments due to absences within two weeks or sooner if the grade quarter is ending.
ATTIRE and LOCKERS: Dress for class daily. Wash clothes often. Take care to lock up your clothes and valuables. You can purchase PE clothes any time from the locker rooms with cash or check. All PE clothes must be marked with first and last names prior to wearing in class. You will need athletic shoes (NO: crocs, boots, slippers, sandals,vans) Sweats and leggings may be worn during cold weather but must be marked with name and worn only for PE. Your PE clothes must be worn under hoodies. You may not wear another students clothes or wear PE clothes outside of the class while at school. If you forget your PE clothes there are loaner clothes to check out of the locker room. (Present ID card.) First and second loaner are discipline free. Third loaner receives a one hour detention after school. You may put roll on deodorant, brushes, hair ties, personal products, wipes in your locker. No sprays, mirrors, glass or axe.
