Q: What involvement does ThermoFisher Scientific have in the community beyond business? Any specific initiatives? (S.V., grade 11)

The Thermo Fisher Fremont site partners with dozens of local non-profit organizations throughout the year to help those in need and serve our local community. Over the last several years, we’ve worked with organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Family Giving Tree and Project Linus, to name a few. We also participate in annual Bay Area events such as the Bay Area Science Festival and the Bay Area Tech Challenge.

Thermo Fisher Fremont site is currently partnering with Project Linus to make blankets for children in need. Further, beginning in November, we will also participate in the Family Giving Tree annual Holiday Wish Drive to provide gifts for Bay Area children, families, and seniors from low-income households.

Beyond this, across the broader organization, Thermo Fisher Scientific does a tremendous amount of work with communities across the country, and across the world. Q: What is the most popular product produced? (A.G., grade 11)

The Fremont site produces over 4,500 unique products. Some of our most popular products at the moment include:

  • Controls for COVID-19 PCR testing to ensure tests are accurate. This product is used together with reagents from other Thermo Fisher Scientific businesses.

  • Toxicology reagents which include Drugs of Abuse products. These are used to test for the presence of drugs in a patient’s urine, blood, or saliva.

Q: Are there any groups of people who disproportionately require your services and why? (C.C., grade 12)

The Fremont site helps healthcare professionals, and ultimately patients. Our main customers include clinicians, criminal justice, IVD laboratories and the pharmaceutical industry.

  • Our therapeutic drug monitoring, immunosuppressant drug monitoring and pain management products help hospitals and physician office laboratories to ensure that they are prescribing patients the right amounts of drugs and that the patients are taking the correct amounts of their prescribed drugs.

  • Through our drugs of abuse tests, customers in the criminal justice field can ensure that people are not taking illegal drugs, with the ultimate goal of rehabilitating offenders and reducing recidivism.

  • With the use of our quality control products, IVD/hospital laboratories can ensure that their test results are accurate, precise, and reproducible so patients are always getting the right treatment.

  • Customers in the Pharma industry use our companion diagnostic products to test patient samples and obtain accurate results to develop the right medications for all types of diseases – treating cancer, infectious diseases, etc.

Q: Does ThermoFisher accept ideas for products of any field of work, or does it focus specifically on products for certain fields? (A.L., grade 11)

Q: What are some common problems you face during the manufacturing process at your company? (K.G, grade 11)

Some of the common problems we face in production are meeting product specification needs, which requires our technical team, who typically have backgrounds in chemistry, biology, engineering, or biochemistry, to troubleshoot and make adjustments to ensure products meet specification and perform as designed and agreed upon by regulatory agencies like the FDA.

Q: Do you offer internships for high school students? If so, where can I find more information? (M.S., grade 11)

Thermo Fisher provides many internship opportunities and Early Talent Programs. Our internships are usually offered for a 10-12 week-period to students currently enrolled in undergrad, graduate and Ph.D. programs. In addition, opportunities are provided for mentorship, structured learning, and leadership development. Successful interns may be invited to interview for our leadership development programs or direct hire positions upon graduation. At this point, a formal internship program for High School Internships is offered in Massachusetts with further locations under review.

Q: What measures do you take to make sure an employee is familiar with the company, other employees, and work culture in ThermoFisher when first starting off? (E.M., grade 11)

When a new employee comes on board, they undergo an extensive onboarding process where they learn about the company and receive training specific to their job function. In addition to the onboarding process, site culture is a priority in Fremont. We foster a work environment where people can bring their authentic selves to work every day, and the site holds regular fun employee events, like summer BBQs, holiday parties and more.

Q: What measures are taken to ensure that an employee feels safe in the workplace? (J.N., grade 11)

As a responsible corporate citizen, Thermo Fisher Scientific is committed to protecting the environment, as well as the health and safety of our employees. To this end, our company does the following:

  • Comply with all applicable environmental, health and safety (EHS) laws, regulations, and other related standards.

  • Operate in a manner that ensures a safe work environment.

  • Continuously improve and periodically evaluate our EHS performance and take necessary preventative and corrective measures; and

Q: What type of science is Fremont’s Niche Diagnostic Center for Excellence mainly focused on? (M.S., grade 12)

The Fremont site is mainly focused on biochemistry, biology, organic chemistry, and manufacturing engineering.

Q: To what extent has your company currently done for the environment and how much more do you think needs to be done? (J.M., grade 12) What strides has this company made in working towards being more environmentally friendly? (H.B., grade 12)

By 2030, Thermo Fisher Scientific will reduce greenhouse gas emissions from our operations by 30%, from our 2018 levels. This goal was established in 2019 and is focused on tackling emissions resulting from our sites and vehicles. This target encompasses scope 1 and 2 emissions which includes energy use for all buildings and company vehicles. Our progress towards this target will be reported annually via our CSR Report & CDP filing.

In alignment with the UN Paris Climate Agreement and the Science Based Targets initiative, we have committed to net-zero carbon emissions throughout our operations as well as our supply chain and product footprint by 2050.

Q: What company products are ThermoFisher most proud of and why? (C.H. grade 12)

Currently, at our Fremont site, our team is very proud of the quality control products we are producing to combat the COVID-19 pandemic. Our quality control products are an essential piece of every Thermo Fisher test kit. And on average, 1 in every 3 COVID-19 tests in the U.S. is a Thermo Fisher test.
