Dear Families and Friends of Room 49,
Welcome to Walters Middle School! I am looking forward to leading this group of sixth grade scholars this year. I am excited to be teaching math, science and a wheel course of Academic Strategies and Lifestyle Essentials. This year will be full of enriching opportunities and new challenges to increase learning. The purpose of this letter is to inform you of three things: my class rules, what I will be teaching and some important school supplies for your child to use at home and school.
To ensure your child and all the students in my class the proper learning environment they need, I am utilizing the following Class Rules and Creed. Please note that these rules are my personal classroom rules. The rest of the school rules are printed in your child’s agenda. Students at Walters Middle School will also be adhering to shared PROUD Warrior expectations to help with behavior in the class and at school.
MY CLASS RULES: CLASS CREED:
1. Be respectful. 1. Take care of yourself.
2. Be a good decision maker. 2. Take care of others.
3. Be a problem solver. 3. Take care of this place.
4. Be prepared every day to learn.
NOTE: Severe disruption by any child will be immediately reported to the administration. I expect that your child will behave appropriately at school. A child who chooses not to adhere to the school rules will be sent to the Responsibility Center and/or detention. Detention is served during lunch(half an hour) or after school(from 1 hour to the maximum 3 hours). Please see your child’s agenda for Walters’ policy.
Course of Study:
Sixth graders will be using Reveal Mathematics Book Course 1. I will be using other materials to add to their math education. I will be using Amplify for science. Your child will receive a workbook that they can write in for both subjects. It is my expectation that the math book will stay in your child’s backpack. The Amplify workbook will stay in the classroom. Science and math will be taught live with homework to be given out that day to be turned in at the assigned date
. I will be teaching Academic Strategies in the first quarter and the Lifestyle Essentials class for the three remaining quarters. Homework announcements will be posted on Google Classroom and given out in class. Your child will be using IXL and iReady for enrichment.
I weigh all homework at 40% and tests at 60%. There will be projects to do in science which are at 10%. I allow my students to make up any homework that has a grade of a D (60%) or worse, which does not apply to any work turned in late. I will be deducting points for late work. For work turned in one day late, the maximum score will be 80%, two days will be 70%, three or more days 60%. I cannot take late work if it’s from the previous semester. Your child will receive the traditional A-F grades. The Wheel classes will get a Pass or No Pass grade. You will be notified every day on Aeries on the assignments and grades for your child.
Important School Supplies
Please supply your child with enough paper, scissors, and writing(pencils and/or pens) and coloring tools(pencils, markers) and highlighters at home and for their backpack. Your child will need two composition or spiral bound notebooks for math and science for note taking.
If you would like to donate something to my classroom, baby wipes are very useful as well as facial tissues. Those would be very appreciated if you choose to donate them.
I hope we will work together to make sure your child is a very successful citizen and scholar in sixth grade for the 2024-2025 school year!
Yours,
Mrs. Narveson
